Key Items
A complete list of the Key Items obtained throughout Final Fantasy IX, including where each one is found and what it is used for. Key Items are stored in their own section of the menu and cannot be used in battle. Regular usable Items are covered on the Item List page.
Story Progression
Ticket
- Description:
- “Vivi’s key item. A very expensive-looking ticket.”
- Obtained:
- Vivi starts the game with it when he arrives in Alexandria (Disc 1).
- Use:
- Vivi shows it at the Ticket Booth, where the Ticketmaster reveals that it is a fake.
Silver Pendant
- Description:
- “Dagger’s key item.”
- Obtained:
- Dagger carries this royal pendant from the beginning of the game (Disc 1).
- Use:
- An heirloom of the Alexandrian royal family that plays an important part in the story.
Continental Map
- Description:
- “A key item received from Blank. Checks current location and place names on the world map.”
- Obtained:
- Given to you by Blank in the Evil Forest (Disc 1).
- Use:
- Lets you check your current location and nearby place names while on the world map.
Blank’s Medicine
- Description:
- “A key item received from Blank. An antidote to Plant Brain’s seed.”
- Obtained:
- Given to you by Blank during the escape from the Evil Forest (Disc 1).
- Use:
- Used to cure Dagger after she is attacked during the escape.
Moogle’s Flute
- Description:
- “A key item received in Evil Forest. Calls a moogle while on the world map. A beautiful flute with intricate decoration.”
- Obtained:
- Given to you by the moogles outside the Evil Forest after the party escapes (Disc 1).
- Use:

Lets you call a moogle while on the world map so that you can save your game or use a
Tent. It stays with you for the entire game.
World Map
- Description:
- “A key item received from Cid. Checks current location and place names on the world map.”
- Obtained:
- Given to you by Regent Cid before the party leaves Lindblum (Disc 2).
- Use:
- Replaces the Continental Map, letting you check locations and place names across the entire world.
Gate Pass
- Description:
- “A key item received in South Gate. Lindblum’s travel passport.”
- Obtained:
- Given to Steiner while traveling through South Gate (Disc 2).
- Use:
- Shown to the Guards to pass through the South Gate checkpoints.
Gizamaluke Bell
- Description:
- “A key item in Gizamaluke. Opens the ‘Bell Door.’”
- Obtained:
- Given to you by a dying Burmecian soldier in Gizamaluke’s Grotto (Disc 1). You will receive several of them as you make your way through the area.
- Use:
- Each bell opens one of the bell doors inside the Grotto and shatters after it is used.
Kupo Nut
- Description:
- “A key item received in Lindblum. Favorite food of the moogles.”
- Obtained:
- The first Kupo Nut is obtained in Lindblum (Disc 1), and moogles will give you more as the game goes on, though you can only carry one at a time.
- Use:
- Given to Moguta in Gizamaluke’s Grotto in exchange for rewards. Check out the Kupo Nuts side quest page for the full list.
Holy Bell
- Description:
- “A key item in Gizamaluke. Opens the ‘Holy Door.’”
- Obtained:
- Given to you by Moguta the moogle in Gizamaluke’s Grotto in exchange for a Kupo Nut (Disc 1).
- Use:
- Opens the large door leading to the back of the Grotto.
Protection Bell
- Description:
- “A key item in Burmecia. Opens the ‘Protection Door.’”
- Obtained:
- Found on the far side of a bed in Burmecia (Disc 1).
- Use:
- Opens the “Protection Door” found in Burmecia.
Supersoft
- Description:
- “A key item received in Treno. Cures permanently-petrified Blank. A magical item.”
- Obtained:
- Obtained from Doctor Tot while Marcus and Dagger travel to Treno (Disc 2).
- Use:
- Intended to cure Blank, who was petrified in the Evil Forest. It is handed over during the story.
Blue, Red, Yellow, and Green Stones
- Description:
- “A mysterious rare item received in the Conde Petie Mountain Path.” (each stone)
- Obtained:
- Taken from four small statues along the Conde Petie Mountain Path (Disc 2).
- Use:

Place all four into the large statue along the path to receive a
Moonstone.
Memory Earring
- Description:
- “Eiko’s key item.”
- Obtained:
- Received during the second visit to Madain Sari after Eiko’s stolen jewel is recovered (Disc 2).
- Use:
- A memento that Eiko carries with her for the rest of the game.
Desert Star
- Description:
- “Key item from Cleyra. Retrieved in Alexandria. Linked to the eidolons.”
- Obtained:
- Comes into the party’s possession during the attack on Alexandria (Disc 3).
- Use:
- Used automatically during the events of the attack.
Falcon Claw
- Description:
- “Key item from Lindblum. Acquired in Alexandria. Linked to the eidolons.”
- Obtained:
- Comes into the party’s possession during the attack on Alexandria, alongside the Desert Star (Disc 3).
- Use:
- Used automatically during the events of the attack.
Unusual, Strange, and Beautiful Potions
- Description:
- “A key item received in Lindblum. An ingredient to the medicine that can cure Cid’s curse.” (each potion)
- Obtained:
- All three are gathered around Lindblum while helping to brew the medicine that can cure Regent Cid (Disc 3).
- Use:
- Combined into the potion used on Cid during the story.
Gulug Stone
- Description:
- “A key item received in Oeilvert. A mysterious item Kuja is after.”
- Obtained:
- Found deep within Oeilvert (Disc 3). Taking it triggers a boss battle.
- Use:
- Retrieved for Kuja in exchange for the party members held hostage at the Desert Palace. It is later used at Mount Gulug.
Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth Mirrors
- Description:
- “A key item received in Ipsen’s Castle. A key to reaching Terra.” (each mirror)
- Obtained:
- Found at the top of Ipsen’s Castle (Disc 3).
- Use:
- Each mirror is taken to one of the four elemental shrines to break the seals guarding the way to Terra.
Side Quests
King of Jump Rope
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Alexandria. A medal of honor given to the champion jump-roper.”
- Obtained:
- Awarded for reaching 1,000 consecutive jumps in the jump rope mini-game in Alexandria, first available as Vivi on Disc 1.
- Use:
- Serves as proof of the feat and has no other use.
- Missable:
- Yes. It can no longer be earned once Alexandria is unavailable later in the game.
Autograph
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Lindblum. An autograph of superstar Lowell.”
- Obtained:
- Received from Lowell in Michael’s studio in the Theater District during the first visit to Lindblum (Disc 1).
- Use:
- Counts toward your Treasure Hunter rank.
- Missable:
- Yes. It is only available during the first visit to Lindblum on Disc 1.
Moogle Suit
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Lindblum. A costume worn by the superstar Lowell.”
- Obtained:
- Found in Michael’s studio during the same event as the Autograph in Lindblum (Disc 1).
- Use:
- Counts toward your Treasure Hunter rank.
- Missable:
- Yes. It is only available during the first visit to Lindblum on Disc 1.
Master Hunter
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Lindblum. A title given to the best hunter in the kingdom.”
- Obtained:
- Awarded for winning the Festival of the Hunt with Zidane in Lindblum (Disc 1).
- Use:
- Kept as proof of victory. Counts toward your Treasure Hunter rank.
- Missable:
- Yes. The Festival of the Hunt only occurs once, and Zidane must win it.
Moccha Coffee
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Bohden Arch. Very delicious coffee beans.”
- Obtained:
- Found near the water at the Bohden Arch area of South Gate. Check out the Rare Coffees side quest page for the details.
- Use:
- One of the three rare coffees delivered to Morrid at Observatory Mountain.
- Missable:
- Yes. All three coffees must be delivered to Morrid before the end of Disc 3.
Kirman Coffee
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Madain Sari. Very delicious coffee beans.”
- Obtained:
- Found on the left side of the kitchen in Madain Sari (Disc 2).
- Use:
- One of the three rare coffees delivered to Morrid at Observatory Mountain.
- Missable:
- Yes. All three coffees must be delivered to Morrid before the end of Disc 3.
Athlete Queen
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Alexandria. Good luck, Hippaul! Reach for the stars!”
- Obtained:
- Awarded for beating Hippaul once he reaches Level 80 in the Hippaul Racing mini-game in Alexandria (Disc 3).
- Use:
- Kept as proof of victory. Counts toward your Treasure Hunter rank.
- Missable:
- Yes. Hippaul Racing is only available early in Disc 3.
Mayor’s Key
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Dali Village. Protects the mayor’s ‘key item.’”
- Obtained:
- Found in the mayor’s house in Dali while the mayor is away during the Treno card tournament section of the game (Disc 3). Search the desk, then check the Heater.
- Use:
- Opens the locked doorway at the back of the Dali windmill, which leads to the Burman Coffee and the Chocobo’s Pen.
- Missable:
- Yes. It can only be obtained by traveling to Dali during the Treno card tournament on Disc 3.
Mini-Brahne
- Description:
- “The latest fad among Lindblum’s kids: Collecting action figures! A very popular rare item.”
- Obtained:
- Found while searching the desk in the Dali mayor’s house, during the same visit as the Mayor’s Key (Disc 3).
- Use:
- One of four collectible figurines. Counts toward your Treasure Hunter rank.
- Missable:
- Yes. Same window as the Mayor’s Key.
Burman Coffee
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Dali. Very delicious coffee beans.”
- Obtained:
- Hidden with the 30,000 Gil chest inside the locked area of the Dali windmill, which is opened using the Mayor’s Key (Disc 3). Check out the Rare Coffees side quest page for the details.
- Use:
- One of the three rare coffees delivered to Morrid at Observatory Mountain.
- Missable:
- Yes. It requires the Mayor’s Key, and all three coffees must be delivered before the end of Disc 3.
Mini-Prima Vista
- Obtained:
- Awarded by Morrid for delivering all three rare coffees. The model is sent to the Tantalus hideout in Lindblum, where you can pick it up.
- Use:
- One of four collectible figurines. Counts toward your Treasure Hunter rank.
- Missable:
- Yes. The coffees must be delivered to Morrid before the end of Disc 3.
Mini-Cid
- Description:
- “The latest fad among Lindblum’s kids: Collecting action figures! A very popular rare item.”
- Obtained:
- Purchased at the Treno Auction House.
- Use:
- One of four collectible figurines. Counts toward your Treasure Hunter rank.
Mini-Burmecia
- Description:
- “The latest fad among Lindblum’s kids: Collecting action figures! A very popular rare item.”
- Obtained:
- Found by examining the bed on the upper level of the Tantalus hideout during the first visit to Lindblum (Disc 1).
- Use:
- One of four collectible figurines. Counts toward your Treasure Hunter rank.
Doga’s Artifact
- Description:
- “A rare item bought in an auction. A mysterious item. It looks very old…”
- Obtained:
- Purchased at the Treno Auction House.
- Use:
- With Une’s Mirror also in your inventory, you can listen to music from Final Fantasy III at the Black Mage Village inn. It can also be resold to nobles in Treno as part of the Excalibur side quest.
Une’s Mirror
- Description:
- “A rare item bought in an auction. A mysterious item. It looks very old…”
- Obtained:
- Purchased at the Treno Auction House.
- Use:
- With Doga’s Artifact also in your inventory, you can listen to music from Final Fantasy III at the Black Mage Village inn. It can also be resold to nobles in Treno as part of the Excalibur side quest.
Rat Tail
- Description:
- “A rare item bought in an auction. A mysterious item. A stolen item, supposedly…”
- Obtained:
- Purchased at the Treno Auction House.
- Use:
- Resold to a nobleman in Treno for a large profit as part of the Excalibur side quest.
Griffin’s Heart
- Description:
- “A rare item bought in an auction. A mysterious item. Raises morale, supposedly…”
- Obtained:
- Purchased at the Treno Auction House.
- Use:
- Resold to a nobleman in Treno for a profit as part of the Excalibur side quest.
Magical Fingertip
- Description:
- “A rare item bought in an auction. A mysterious item. Linked to Gogo, supposedly…”
- Obtained:
- Appears as a lot at the Treno Auction House (Disc 4) once you have spoken with the old man in Daguerreo and bought and resold the four rare items above. Check out the Excalibur side quest page for the details.
- Use:

Given to the old man in Daguerreo in exchange for the
Excalibur.
Superslick
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Mognet Central. Makes you very soft…”
- Obtained:
- Received from Ruby at her mini-theater in Alexandria at the end of the Mognet Central letter-delivery quest (Disc 4).
- Use:
- Delivered to Mognet Central to repair the mail machine. Completing the delivery earns a Protect Ring.
Rank S Medal
- Description:
- “A rare item received in Daguerreo. A medal honoring the best treasure hunter.”
- Obtained:
- Received in Daguerreo once you have reached Rank S in the Treasure Hunter rating.
- Use:
- Serves as proof of your Rank S treasure hunting status.
Stellazzio Coins (x13)
- Obtained:
- Twelve zodiac coins hidden all across the world, plus a thirteenth, Ophiuchus, which only appears after the first twelve have been turned in. Check out the Stellazzio side quest page for every location.
- Use:
- Each coin is returned to Queen Stella in Treno in exchange for rewards.
Hammer
- Obtained:
- Received from Queen Stella as the reward for the thirteenth Stellazzio, Ophiuchus.
- Use:

Can be used to synthesize Steiner’s
Tin Armor, or kept until the end of the game to add a small extra scene to the ending. The two options are mutually exclusive.
Chocographs (x24)
- Obtained:
- Dug up while playing Chocobo Hot and Cold, along with six Chocograph Pieces. Check out the Chocographs page for every location and treasure.
- Use:
- Treasure maps that lead Choco to buried treasure all around the world.
Strategy Guide
- Description:
- “You are now invincible. Good job!”
- Obtained:
- Awarded for defeating Ozma, the game’s hidden superboss.
- Use:
- Serves as proof of victory and has no other use.
