Back to Their Origin
You’ve reached the final chapter of the game and the final Main Scenario Quest, but there isn’t much fanfare when you get back to the Hideaway after escaping from the Interdimensional Rift.
The Hideaway
Charon isn’t selling anything new if you already purchased the latest items from Goetz; otherwise, buy the following items from her:

There are a few steps to complete before we reach the final onslaught of Optional Quests. Follow the instructions and speak with Otto in the mess, then speak with Joshua out on the balcony. Finally, talk to Jill on the balcony of Clive’s Chambers, and you’ve now reached the endgame content of Final Fantasy XVI.

End-Game Quests and Content
If you access the world map, the final dungeon of the game will appear in the center of the map, called Origin in Central Valisthea. You can technically go there now if you want to complete the final chapter of the game without completing any of the optional stuff. If so, use the ‘next’ arrows at the top and bottom of the page, or the following link, to head over to the Origin walkthrough page.
But Final Fantasy games are all about the end-game content and side quests! So let’s get started on those.
There are thirteen or more Optional Quests that have become available. Some of these quests will unlock more Optional Quests, more Hunts to complete, and other entertaining end-game content as well. The most critical quests to complete are Where There’s a Will and
Priceless. You have to complete the first one to unlock the second one:
Where There’s a Will
Optional Quest

“Joshua has received a message from Cyril, saying that something akin to their father’s last will and testament has been found. He suggests that he and Clive make for Tabor to learn more.”

Priceless
Optional Quest

This quest begins from a missive called Concern for Jill.
“Joshua is worried that recent events have begun to weigh heavily on Jill and wonders if there is not something he and Clive might do to lift her spirits.”

Completing these two quests will have Joshua and Jill join Clive’s party for the remaining end-game content until they reach Origin. Finishing the end-game content is much easier with a party of four, but more importantly, though, adding Joshua and Jill to your party is the requirement you need to complete to unlock the Final Fantasy XVI DLC.

If you’ve completed all of the optional content up to this point, including the two Optional Quests above, you should have enough Renown to collect another reward, and this one is one of the most powerful rewards in the game:

Genji Gloves
Helpful Hint
It should go without saying, but just in case it doesn’t, the Genji Gloves are one of the most powerful accessories in the game as the damage increase applies to all of your abilities across the board. Make room for this as one of the three accessories that you equip to Clive.

Tips and Tricks

Want more tips and tricks on which accessories to use? Check out the “Best Accessories” page in the Tips and Tricks section for a full breakdown.
Downloadable Content (DLC) Expansions
In the year or so after Final Fantasy XVI was launched, the developers added two additional DLC expansions: Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide
. You have three options for when you complete the DLC:
- Complete it now!
- After finishing the rest of the end-game content in the “Back to Their Origins” Main Scenario Quest.
- After finishing the final boss at ‘Origin’ and returning to your previous save file.
There are pros and cons to each of these options, but this guide recommends doing them now. In short, the story and lore for the DLC take place before the events at ‘Origin,’ and the items you can obtain from the expansions can help you with some of the other Side Quests (like Chronoliths and Hunts). Check out the DLC section for more information about what order you should pick for completing the game’s content.
Expansion Content Overview
DLC Expansions

How to unlock the expansion content and a guide that helps you decide when you should complete it (immediately, after the end-game content, or after the final boss).
As noted above, this walkthrough recommends moving straight into the Echoes of the Fallen expansion content now that it is available. You can skip down to the “Optional Quests” heading below if you plan to leave the DLC until later. Otherwise, talk to Charon at Charon’s Toll and select the “Echoes of the Fallen” option to begin:
Echoes of the Fallen
DLC

“Charon reveals that a new kind of crystal has lately appeared on the market—strange, spiritless shards known as “dust crystals,” which she wagers were mined from a heretofore undiscovered Mothercrystal. Clive sets out to investigate.”

Completing “Echoes of the Fallen” will give you the materials you need to craft a brand new weapon and upgrade the belt and vambraces you picked up at the Sagespire.

Now, let’s move on to the next DLC expansion, which is initiated by a missive labeled (Unmarked) in Clive’s Chambers…
The Rising Tide
DLC

This quest begins from a missive called (Unmarked).
“Often is it that letters requesting aid find their way to Clive’s reading desk. Rarer, though, are occasions when said letters are anonymous. Even rarer still, however, are occasions when the aid in question is to rescue an Eikon thought lost for several centuries. This so happens to be one of those rarest of occasions.”

After completing “The Rising Tide” quest, as well as all of the Optional Quests in Haven, we can now move on to the remaining Optional Quests that popped up in and around the Hideaway.
Optional Quests
Let’s dive into the quests, starting with the ones that begin from the missives at Clive’s reading table:
More than Words
Optional Quest

This quest begins from a missive called In a Mood.
“Once again, Lady Charon is worried about Torgal, pointing to the loyal hound’s recent fits of restlessness as a reason for concern.”

An Inconvenient Truth
Optional Quest

This quest begins from a missive called In Search of a Lost Tome.
“Vivian writes to Clive, asking him to locate a copy of From a Distance, the tome that inspired her to become a scholar.”

A new missive will be delivered after this quest, which will trigger yet another quest:
A Tail to Tell
Optional Quest

This quest begins from a missive called Making Amends.
“Clive receives a letter from Harpocrates that suggests the historian and Prince Dion have a closer relationship than he knew. He journeys to the shelves in search of answers.”

Completing A Tail to Tell will activate a new Hunt to complete in Waloed:
Gizamaluk (The Wailing Banshee)
Notorious Mark / Hunt

“Cursebreakers came across this creature while searching for survivors near the abandoned village of Garnick. Misled by the abomination’s appearance into thinking she might be a local woman, they went to offer their help—but soon it was they who were seeking salvation. The survivors say they can still hear the screams—both those of the wight, and those of their fallen comrades.”

Now we can move on to the Optional Quests that aren’t triggered by missives, starting with…
Three’s Company
Optional Quest

“Lord Byron has a plan to bring order to the realm, and that plan involves longtime acquaintance, Dhalmekian Field Marshal Eugen Havel. The field marshal, however, has misgivings about linking arms with a known outlaw and first wishes to gauge Clive’s character.”

Nobody’s Tool
Optional Quest

“Dorys asks Clive to accompany her to the prison Balmung Dark, where she believes an acquaintance of hers might be interned.”

During this quest, you will have to defeat the Notorious Mark, the “Kuza Beast.”
Kuza Beast
Notorious Mark / Hunt

“A monster born in Balmung Dark, and quite possibly the deadliest beast known to man. Cid, we beg you to slay it, not only that the world might be a safer place, but that the Bearers who lost their lives to that vile creature might at last be avenged. Forgive our presumption, but knowing what we do of it, we doubt that any but you could emerge from its cage alive.”

Completing Nobody’s Tool and defeating the Kuza Beast will unlock a new Hunt…
Behemoth King (The Masterless Marauder)
Notorious Mark / Hunt

“The Waloeder army captured such beasts and tried to train them to serve, but this particular specimen’s training has long since ceased. Whether its captors turned Akashic with the rest of their comrades or were eaten by their pet when it broke free from its bonds, we shall never know. All we do know is there is none left alive who knows the words to put an end to its rampage—only a show of force will suffice.”

Now we can move on to the next Optional Quest:
Trial and Error
Optional Quest

“Cursebreaker Nazaire has asked for Clive’s assistance in the evaluation of a new recruit—specifically one who fancies becoming the hideaway’s next best scout.”

Silver Linings
Optional Quest

“Gav has carved a gift for Edda’s unborn child, as is tradition in the Northern Territories, but lacks the final piece required to complete it—the feather of a rarely seen silver chocobo.”

Aiming High
Optional Quest

“The hideaway’s children have noticed that after returning from Stonhyrr, Mid is no longer her usual chipper self and are concerned that something might be amiss.”

Litany of Errors
Optional Quest

“Herman, a recent recruit to the Cursebreakers, seeks passage to Ash, no matter what the assignment might be. Clive refuses on the grounds that it is simply too dangerous, but offers to go in Herman’s stead.”

The remaining Optional Quests are completed in locations outside of the Hideaway, starting with…
Dhalmekia
Lines in the Sand II
Optional Quest

“L’ubor asks that Clive take the orphans that he had been caring for into his protection. Clive gladly agrees, but as he does so, they hear the horrifying news that a band of Akashic may soon be at Dalimil’s gates.”

The next quest is in another section of Dhalmekia altogether. Warp to the Tabor Obelisk and head into Clayhearth and talk to Cyril.
Duty Undying II
Optional Quest

“Cyril tells Clive that a high-ranking member of his order, the Third Chair, has gone missing in Ash on another of the Undying’s so-called “surveys.” He directs Clive to Mikkelburg, the acolyte’s last known location.”

Here Be Rosfields
Achievement/Trophy
“Visit all areas on the world and local maps.” This last Optional Quest will take you to one of the final areas that should be covered by fog of war on the world map. It may be the case that there are other areas that you haven’t visited, but otherwise, there’s a good chance that you’ll receive the achievement/trophy while completing it.

The last quest takes place in…
Sanbreque
Travel to the Northreach Obelisk and find Isabelle standing in front of the Veil.
Under New Management II
Optional Quest

“With the garrison otherwise engaged in refortifying Northreach and rebuilding Caer Norvent, Isabelle fears that the town wants for sentries, and asks Clive to lend Philippe and his newly formed town watch his aid.”

And They Opened Up My Mind
Achievement/Trophy
“Collect six signboards.” Assuming you’ve completed all of the Optional Quests listed up to this point, completing Under New Management II should give you the sixth and final signboard you need to receive this achievement/trophy.

Completing this last quest will unlock two new Hunts in the area:
Prince of Death (The Grim Reaper)
Notorious Mark / Hunt

“There is a saying among the imperial soldiers of the Northreach garrison—“steer clear of the drowned tower, lest the specter’s sickle reap your root.“ They speak in typically uncouth terms of the thrall dwells within the aetherflood—one whose frightful aspect and command over lesser minions would appear to mark him as a high-ranking member of his species.”

Knight of the Splendent Heart
Notorious Mark / Hunt

“Most pilgrims to the Holy Capital of Oriflamme pass through the Penitent’s Gate on the road from the Royal Meadows. Of late, however, a knight in shining armor has elected to station himself beside this entrance, accusing any and all passers-by of being Cid the Outlaw—the one who led Prince Dion down the path to destruction—and challenging them to a duel to the death.”

Hunter, Hunted
Achievement/Trophy
“Clear the Hunt Board.” Prince of Death and Knight of the Splendent Heart should be the last two Hunts you need to receive this achievement/trophy. Otherwise, double-check the Hunt Board or check the Hunts section to see which ones you’ve missed.

You should now have the materials required to craft Gotterdammerung, which is a really powerful sword, but it won’t be your strongest weapon if you completed the DLC Expansion content.

Half Past Twilight
Achievement/Trophy
“Craft the legendary sword Gotterdammerung.” You’ll automatically receive this achievement/trophy once you craft Gotterdammerung.

Make sure you pick up the last reward from The Patron’s Whisper:

Careful Whisper
Achievement/Trophy
“Obtain all available items from your patrons.” This ‘unsigned’ donation for 2,850 Renown is the last donation you need to earn this achievement/trophy.

Congratulations! You’ve officially completed all of the DLC, the Optional Quests, and the Hunts in Final Fantasy XVI. There are a few additional side quests that you can complete, and then you’re off to challenge the final boss of the game.
Side Quests
Clive is now equipped with all of the game’s most powerful equipment and accessories (with a few minor exceptions), so it’s time to take on the…
Chronoliths

“Chronoliths are similar to the Arete Stone in that within them is hidden a virtual battlefield accessible by Clive and Clive alone. Each chronolith presents Clive with a timed trial in which he must combat continuous waves of deadly enemies, equipped only with the feat and abilities of a single Eikon. Consumable use is also strictly prohibited.”
Trial Run
Achievement/Trophy
“Complete a chronolith trial.” Completing any one of the seven Chronolith Trials listed in the side quests section will reward you with this achievement/trophy.

You can also use the Treasure Map to track down the treasure:
Treasure Map
Side Quests

“A crudely drawn map in whose margin is scrawled the message, ‘To all who would seek to mint gil, follow ye the path to Kretov.’”
Lastly, make sure that you’ve obtained all of the Curiosities for the “Wall of Memories.”
The Wall of Memories
Side Quests

As you progress through the game, Clive will amass a collection of Curiosities that include the description “Displayed in Clive’s chambers.” These are the items that will be added to Clive’s Wall of Memories. You’ll have to play through all of the content to collect them all.
For the Hoard
Achievement/Trophy
“Obtain all curiosities.” You’ll receive this achievement/trophy automatically once you’ve obtained all of the curiosities required to complete the Wall of Memories in Clive’s Chambers.

The last things to do are ensure that you’ve completed the Thousand Tomes and obtained all of the Achievements/Trophies, but this can be completed after the final chapter of the game.

Of Gods and Men
Walkthrough Guide

“What awaits Clive in the heart of Origin? A fate laid before him by Ultima, or one of his choosing? A fate that will spell the end of mankind, or one that will bring the age of gods and myth to its close and welcome in a new era of reason? The reckoning is come.”
