Best Party

This page provides an overview of each of the playable characters in Final Fantasy X and recommendations on which party members you should include and which to avoid. As with all character recommendations in the Final Fantasy franchise, there are two important things to keep in mind:

  1. This list is incredibly subjective.
There are pros and cons to using every party member, and it's impossible for a strategy guide to cover all possible scenarios, but through player testing and general feedback from fans of the series, there are a few characters that are considered front-runners. Does this mean you can't use certain characters? That brings us to the next point…
  2. There are no characters that are so bad that you need to avoid using them entirely.
You can beat Final Fantasy X using any combination of characters, and many gamers have spent time finding creative party combinations and challenging themselves to beat the game with a "less than ideal" setup. Not only can you beat the game with any character, you can rotate characters in and out as needed relatively easy in this game.

With all that said, which party members would this strategy guide recommend using?

Tidus, Rikku, Yuna, Lulu, Auron, Wakka and Kimahri entering the Calm Lands

Character Assessment Criteria

The first thing we need to do is complete a full accounting of each of the playable characters' strengths and weaknesses, and for scoring purposes, we'll look at four elements:

  • Role in the party
  • Key abilities
  • Overdrive
  • Character Stats / Endgame viability

Here is a more in-depth explanation of what we're looking for in each area.

Role in the party:
Some characters have very specific roles within the party. For example, Yuna's role is fairly obvious; she won't be focusing on regular, physical attacks (for the most part), she will be summoning Aeons and casting magic. This question pertains to assessing how useful that role will be throughout the game.
Key abilities:
Do they gain access to abilities that make them more or less useful than other party members?
Overdrive:
Is the character's Overdrive incredibly powerful? Or is it an active detriment and impediment to your progress? (Don't worry, none of them are that bad; no one transforms into an uncontrollable beast like Vincent in FF7).
Character Stats / Endgame Viability:
How quickly do their stats grow? And as their stats grow, how useful are they at the end of the game? Despite all characters having access to the same Sphere Grid, they all start with different amounts of HP/Strength/Defense/Agility/MP/Magic/Luck, which means they won't all have the same stats once they're fully leveled. Which ones have the best stats?

Individual Character Analysis

Let's look at each of our criteria and touch on each character's strengths and weaknesses in that area:

Criteria Analysis
Role in the party

Tidus and Rikku share a fairly similar role of being a strong jack-of-all-trades. Tidus is fast, gets in lots of attacks, and can support with White Magic IconHaste / Special Ability IconCheer / etc. Rikku is right behind him, but with her ability to Special Ability IconSteal and use the Special Ability IconUse command to heal in battle.

Auron is a straight physical damage dealer with strong debuff utility through his Skill IconBreak abilities.

Yuna's primary role is to summon Aeons and heal the party. She eventually will gain access to strong magic attacks as well, so she and Lulu share a similar role in that respect. Yuna's role in the party as a strong healer can be mitigated by having Rikku act as a healer with her support abilities; otherwise, she's practically a requirement to have in the party (or at least to swap in regularly).

Wakka's primary role is as a ranged attacker. He is the only character who can reliably hit flying enemies with his regular attack, which makes him a near-requirement in random encounters. Beyond that, his status-inflicting attacks (Skill IconDark Attack, Skill IconSilence Attack) give him some crowd control utility.

Kimahri doesn't have a fixed role, but that's by design. His position on the Sphere Grid lets him adapt to whatever your party needs: an early Special Ability IconSteal user, a second black mage, or additional physical damage. His role depends entirely on which path you send him down.

Key Abilities

Rikku wins in this category. The ability to Special Ability IconSteal items, to make use of Special Ability IconUse (which allows her to function as a healer), and her Overdrive IconMix Overdrive, give her an incredibly wide range of tools to use. Kimahri also benefits from this because he can very quickly make his way down Rikku's Sphere Grid path.

Auron's Break abilities are more useful than they might appear. Skill IconArmor Break in particular is one of the most impactful abilities in the game, effectively doubling physical damage against a target. Skill IconPower Break and Skill IconMental Break are also valuable for reducing damage from bosses. That said, Wakka's status abilities, while useful in some situations, aren't as broadly impactful as the abilities other characters bring.

Yuna's heals tend to be quite important, but it's possible to get through the game without relying on black magic at all, so Lulu doesn't have any important key abilities that you will miss.

Overdrive

Rikku and Wakka have the strongest Overdrive abilities (Overdrive IconMix and Overdrive IconAttack Reels). Check out the Overdrives section for more information.

Tidus's and Auron's Overdrives are good but not exceptional. Overdrive IconBlitz Ace deals solid damage across multiple hits, and Auron's Overdrive IconBushido is reliable, with Overdrive IconShooting Star able to eject non-boss enemies from battle entirely.

Yuna's and Lulu's Overdrives don't add much to the mix, and Kimahri's can have some situational usefulness with abilities like Overdrive IconMighty Guard and Overdrive IconWhite Wind.

Character Stats / Endgame Viability

Auron has the highest HP and Strength, but is low on Agility, making him slower than other characters like Rikku, who has high Agility, but low HP. Kimahri is fairly well-rounded; he actually has the second-highest base Strength and is tied for the highest Defense, though this doesn't stand out as much in practice because his Overdrive and ability kit don't scale as well into endgame. Lulu and Yuna have equally strong base Magic stats, but Lulu has higher Magic Defense while Yuna brings healing and summoning. Tidus is fairly average in stats as well.

Usually, the main character in a Final Fantasy title has the best stats by a wide margin… Tidus's value comes more from his Sphere Grid path and access to abilities like White Magic IconHaste and Skill IconQuick Hit than from raw numbers.

Since all characters can eventually complete the entire Sphere Grid and max out their stats, endgame viability is largely determined by Overdrive quality and Celestial Weapon strength. This is why Wakka and Rikku become endgame powerhouses despite not having the most impressive base stats, and why Lulu falls off despite being a strong magic user; physical damage and Overdrives like Overdrive IconAttack Reels and Overdrive IconMix simply scale better than black magic in the endgame.

Using the above context, here is a rough ranking of where each character lands:

Category Tidus Yuna Wakka Lulu Auron Kimahri Rikku
Role in the Party 1 3 5 7 4 6 2
Key Abilities 2 4 6 7 4 5 1
Overdrive 3 6 2 7 5 4 1
Stats / Endgame 1 5 3 7 4 6 2

Tier List

And the final results?

Tier Character
S Tidus / Rikku
A Auron / Wakka / Yuna
B Kimahri
C Lulu

One more reminder though that this list is subjective, and it's absolutely possible to complete the game using any and all party members, so be creative. Don't let these recommendations feel forced into a particular playstyle. Use it as guidance if you're looking to improve your play if you need to.
