Independent Materia (Purple)
A full list of all of the Independent Materia found within Final Fantasy VII. Independent Materia takes effect immediately and does not need to be paired or used in order to benefit from its effects.
- Description:
- Equipping a Chocobo Lure Materia enables battles that involve a Chocobo and are the primary means of obtaining a Chocobo. Chocobos can be obtained in areas near Chocobo tracks on the world map. The more levels on the Chocobo Lure Materia the more likely that battles will include a Chocobo. This means that equipping two or more can continue to increase the chances.
- Location:
- The first Chocobo Lure Materia is purchased from Choco Billy at the Chocobo Farm.
- The second Chocobo Lure Materia can be picked up on a later visit to the Chocobo Farm.
- Description:
- Causes the character to counter attack with a regular attack after being attacked with a physical attack. There is no counter attack against magic attacks. It can be used in conjunction with a Cover Materia to increase the likelihood of a counter attack taking place. The higher leveled the Materia the more likely it is to work (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% respectively).
- Location:
- A Counter Attack Materia automatically drops after you defeat Materia Keeper in Mount Nibel and can be picked up off the ground. You can return to Mount Nibel if you missed it.
- Description:
- Allows a character to cover another (hopefully weaker) character and take the damage on their behalf. This can be useful for protecting weaker characters and can compliment Counter Attack Materia well. The front and back row do not have an impact on this.
- Location:
- You can obtain a Cover Materia in the garden outside of Aeris’s House in the Sector 5 Slums (and can be seen in the screenshot below).
- Description:
- Equipping this Materia reduces the chances that you will be thrown into a random battle as you wander through enemy infested territories. The chances can never be fully reduced down to 0% but the more it is leveled up the less likely you are to encounter enemies.
- Location:
- You can win an Enemy Away Materia in the Chocobo Square at Gold Saucer.
- Description:
- Equipping an Enemy Lure Materia offers the opposite effects of an Enemy Away Materia - it increases the chances of encountering a random enemy while traveling.
- Location:
- You can win an Enemy Lure Materia in the Battle Square at Gold Saucer. Check out the Battle Square side quest section for more information about obtaining points to buy items with BP.
- Description:
- Increases the amount of experience gained from battles. At level one it increases the amount of experience by 1.5x, at level 2 it increases to 2.0x.
- Location:
- You can win an Experience Plus Materia at Wonder Square in Gold Saucer.
- Description:
- Increases the amount of gil one receives at the conclusion of a battle by 2.0x (no matter what level). A much more efficient method of earning gil is to sell All Materia as outlined in the Earning Gil section of the tips and tricks area.
- Location:
- You can purchase Gil Plus Materia as a prize in Gold Saucer for 10,000 GP (Gold Saucer Points) in Wonder Square.
- Description:
- Swaps a character’s HP with their MP. This Materia has very limited applications but can be used to charge Limit Breaks faster for the purpose of learning new Limit Breaks (lower HP makes it easier to charge the Limit Break gauge).
- Location:
- You can obtain the Materia from one of the Materia Caves as part of the Chocobo Racing and Breeding side quest.
- Description:
- Increases a character’s HP by either 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% or 50% depending on the level of the HP Plus Materia. These can be incredibly effective at improving the defenses of your characters and it is recommended that you have at least one on each character.
- Location:
- The first HP Plus Materia you can obtain is during the send-off ceremony for Rufus in Junon. You can also purchase them as soon as you reach Cosmo Canyon and in Mideel.
- Description:
- Referred to in the game as Long Range Materia. This Materia allows a character standing in the back row, instead of the front row, to receive no penalty to their attack power for being in the back row. This can be extremely useful for protecting weaker characters such as Tifa, Aeris, Red XIII, Cait Sith and Cid by placing them in the back row without impacting the amount of damage that they do. It can also allow characters to hit flying enemies as well.
- Location:
- You can obtain a Long Range Materia in the Mythril Mine at the top of the cave. You can return to the Mythril Mine to obtain this Materia if you missed it.
- Description:
- Increases a character’s luck stat by 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% or 50% depending on the level of the Materia. Luck increases the chance of a character getting a critical hit (which increases the damage done by their attack by 2.0x). This is a very beneficial Materia as long as you have an open Materia slot for it.
- Location:
- There is a Luck Plus Materia in the Temple of the Ancients. The game coding refers to it at “Lucky Plus Materia” when you pick it up, though this is a misspelling.
- Description:
- Increases a character’s Magic stat by either 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% or 50% depending on the level of the Materia. The Magic stat impacts the amount that Magic Materia hits or heals for (depending on whether it is offensive Materia or defensive Materia). Add this to a character who is focused on magic spells and healing.
- Location:
- The Magic Plus Materia is found in the Forgotten Capital on the way up through the Corel Valley Cave.
- Description:
- Mega All allows all Materia to have the “All Materia” effect which causes each spell to impact all enemies or all characters (depending on the spell type). It also causes the Slash All Materia effect to the character’s attack.
- Location:
- You can pick up the Mega All Materia in the Northen Cave a few screens down.
- Description:
- Increases the maximum MP of the character you equip it to. Best used on your magic-casting characters.
- Location:
- You can purchase this Materia in Cosmo Canyon and Mideel.
- Description:
- Increases your chances to get the first strike off in a battle (the timer for attacks will be full at the beginning of the battle). Chances improve as you level Pre-Emptive Materia up with AP.
- Location:
- Battle Square reward.
- Description:
- Increases the speed of a character. At the start of the battle their attack timer bar will be more full than before with this equipped.
- Location:
- Battle Square reward.
- Description:
- Used during the battle against Emerald Weapon to remove the timer and essentially allow a character to “breath under water”.
- Location:
- There is a side quest involving the Kalm Traveler to obtain an Underwater Materia. You have to use a Morph Materia on a Ghost Ship in Junon to obtain a Guide Book. The Guide Book is exchanged for an Underwater Materia.
