This item database is not intended to be a full Final Fantasy VIII database but rather is intended to provide information on items that are mentioned in the other portions of this guide along with explanations on where to find those items.

- Item usage:
- One of the items required to create Squall’s Ultimate Weapon, Lionheart (only 1 Adamantine is required).
- Where to find it:
- Adamantine can be obtained from Adamantoise which are found in the areas surrounding Galbadia (Hasberry Plains, Holy Glory Cape, Long Horn Island) or from Refining the Minotaur Card into 10 Adamantine.
- Item Usage:
- Using an Aura Stone in battle allows you to use Aura magic. Aura Stones can also be refined into Aura Magic, which is one of the most powerful magics in the game. Aura magic gives a character a chance to use their Limit Break without having low health.
- Where to find it:
- You can purchase Power Wrists or Hypno Crowns from Rinrin’s store in Esthar which can be refined into Aura Stones. You can also find some during the Chocobo Forest side quest.
- Item Usage:
- One of the materials required to create the Flame Saber for Squall and which can be refined into various magic.
- Where to find it:
- You can obtain a Betrayal Sword by battling either a Blitz or a Forbidden, both of which are pictured on the cards below. You can find Forbidden’s in the Trabia Region and you can find Blitz’s in the Centra region.
- Item Usage:
- Bomb Fragments are used to create Irvine’s weapon, Ulysses, and Selphie’s weapon, Flail, as well as a myriad of fire type magic.
- Where to find it:
- Bomb Fragments are obtained by defeating Bombs. Head over to the Fire Cavern (from early on in the game) to battle some Bombs if you’d like to pick up some Bomb Fragments.
- Item Usage:
- Chef’s Knife’s are used to create Squall’s weapon, Punishment, and can be refined into Death magic and AP Ammo for Irvine’s Limit Break (Shot).
- Where to find it:
- You can obtain a Chef’s Knife by stealing one from a Tonberry or modifying their cards.
- Item Usage:
- Cockatrice Pinions are used to create Rinoa’s weapon, Cardinal, and can be refined into Break magic and Softs.
- Where to find it:
- You can obtain Cockatrice Pinions by defeating Cockatrices in Esthar.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Zell a new Limit Break combo: Dolphin Blow. Head over to the Limit Break section for more information on Zell’s Limit Breaks.
- Where to find it:
- Combat King 001 is found on the bottom floor of the Galbadia D-District Prison. Click on the link to go to that section of the strategy guide. You can also buy this magazine from the Esthar bookshop after Tonberry has learned Familiar / Call Shop or directly at the bookstore itself.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Zell a new Limit Break combo: Meteor Strike. Head over to the Limit Break section for more information on Zell’s Limit Breaks.
- Where to find it:
- You receive Combat King 002 after you successfully defeat Fujin and Raijin at the Balamb Hotel.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Zell a new Limit Break combo: Meteor Barret. Head over to the Limit Break section for more information on Zell’s Limit Breaks.
- Where to find it:
- You have to complete a small side quest involving Zell and the Pigtail girl from the Library. Click on the link for more details. The side quest can only be completed after you find the White SeeD Ship. You can also buy this magazine from the Esthar bookshop after Tonberry has learned Familiar / Call Shop or directly at the bookstore itself.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Zell a new Limit Break combo: Different Beat. Head over to the Limit Break section for more information on Zell’s Limit Breaks.
- Where to find it:
- In order to obtain [Combat King 004] you must speak to the Esthar Soldier on the walkway in Esthar City. The Soldier can be found the first time you enter Esthar. Click on this link to see a screenshot of the Solider. You can also buy this magazine from the Esthar bookshop after Tonberry has learned Familiar / Call Shop or directly at the bookstore itself.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Zell a new Limit Break combo: My Final Heaven. Head over to the Limit Break section for more information on Zell’s Limit Breaks.
- Where to find it:
- In order to obtain [Combat King 005] you must trigger the red detonator during the Laguna Dream Sequence at the Centra Excavation Site. You will then find the magazine when Zell and his team are in the Lunatic Pandora. You can also buy this magazine from the Esthar bookshop after Tonberry has learned Familiar / Call Shop or directly at the bookstore itself.
- Item Usage:
- Works the same way as a Tent but also restores the HP of your Guardian Forces.
- Where to find it:
- You can purchase them from Johnny’s Shop in Esthar if you have Tonberry’s Familiar ability.
- Item Usage:
- Curse Spikes are incredibly useful items. They can be used in many ways, including:
- Used to teach Quistis the Blue Magic ability LV?Death
- Used in the creation of Selphie’s Ultimate Weapon, Strange Vision
- They can be refined into Ultima magic, the most powerful magic in the game
- 100 Curse Spikes can be refined into 1 Dark Matter
- 100 Curse Spikes can be refined into 1 Rosetta Stone
- 100 Curse Spikes can be refined into 1 Luck-J Scroll - Where to find it:
- You can obtain [Curse Spike]s by defeating Tri-Faces. Use the fixed Tri-Face encounters trick in the Deep Sea Research Center to stack up on [Curse Spike]s.
- Item Usage:
- Used to teach Quistis the Blue Magic Limit Break ability Shockwave Pulsar, which is her most powerful Limit Break and is one of the most powerful Limit Breaks in the game.
- Where to find it:
- You can use Siren’s Tool-RF ability to refine 100x Curse Spikes into a Dark Matter.
- Item Usage:
- Dino Bones are used to create two weapons, Squall’s Twin Lance and Irvine’s ultimate weapon, Exeter.
- Where to find it:
- You can obtain a Dino Bone by defeating a T-Rexuar. Later in the game (Disc 4 onwards) you can find T-Rexuars on the Island Closest to Hell. Check out the Magic Junction Guide for more information on the Island Closest to Hell.
- Item Usage:
- One of the items required to create Squall’s Ultimate Weapon, Lion Heart (approximately 4 Dragon Fangs are required).
- Where to find it:
- Dropped by Grendels in the forest near Galbadia Garden (referred to as Yaulny Canyon within the game). Hug the canyon wall while you are in the forest and your chances of encountering a Grendel greatly increase.
- Item Usage:
- Used to create one of Zell’s weapons (Maverick) and can be refined into Double and Triple magic.
- Where to find it:
- Dropped by Grendels in the forest near Galbadia Garden (referred to as Yaulny Canyon within the game). Hug the canyon wall while you are in the forest and your chances of encountering a Grendel greatly increase.
- Item Usage:
- One of the items used to create a few of the weapons throughout the game.
- Where to find it:
- Dropped by Grendels in the forest near Galbadia Garden (referred to as Yaulny Canyon within the game). Hug the canyon wall while you are in the forest and your chances of encountering a Grendel greatly increase.
- Item Usage:
- Used to create Irvine’s weapon, Bismarck, and can be refined into Thundaga magic.
- Where to find it:
- Dropped by Blitz, Cockatrice and Creeps around the Galbadia Garden area.
- Item Usage:
- Fully restores abnormal status and HP.
- Where to find it:
- All over the place. They can be purchased from the shop in Esthar.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the SumMag+30% ability. Also used in the creation of many of the best weapons in the game including:
- Selphie’s Ultimate Weapon, Shooting Star
- Quistis’ Utlimate Weapon, Save the Queen
- Creating the best ammo in the game for Irvine’s Limit Break (Shot), which is Pulse Ammo- Pulse Ammo is then used to create Squall’s Ultimate Weapon, Lionheart
Finally, they can be refined into Ultima magic. - Where to find it:
- You can refine 10 Elnoyle Cards into an Energy Crystal, which is painful, but is the best way to get Energy Crystals early on in the game, or you can defeat Elnoyles. You can fight unlimited Elnoyles on Disc 4 in Esthar. Click on the link for more information.
- Item Usage:
- Used to remove the “Blind" status effect.
- Where to find it:
- All over the game and in most shops.
- Item Usage:
- Fish Fins are used in the creation of Zell’s starter weapon, Metal Knuckle.
- Where to find it:
- You can pick up Fish Fins by battling Fastitocalons on beaches.
- Item Usage:
- Using a Flare Stone in battle allows you to use Flare magic. Flare Stones can also be refined into Flare Magic, which is one of the most powerful magics in the game.
- Where to find it:
- You can win them from the card player in the Galbadia D-District Prison. You can also find some during the Chocobo Forest side quest.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the ability Spr+40%.
- Where to find it:
- You can purchase Force Armlets from the Esthar Pet Shop.
- Item Usage:
- Fury Fragments are used in the creation of two of Zell’s weapons - Gauntlet and his ultimate weapon, Ehrgeiz. They can also be refined into Aura magic.
- Where to find it:
- Fury Fragments are dropped by Blue Dragons, Grendels and Ruby Dragons which can all be found on the Island Closest to Hell. You can also Card Mod 4 Blue Dragon Cards to create 1 Fury Fragment.
- Item Usage:
- Give this magazine to Zone on the White SeeD Ship to receive the Shiva Card.
- Where to find it:
- Picked up in the Timber Maniacs building in the town of Timber.
- Item Usage:
- Restores the HP of one party member by 2,000.
- Where to find it:
- All over the game.
- Item Usage:
- Using a Holy Stone in battle allows you to use Holy magic. Holy Stones can also be refined into Holy Magic, which is one of the most powerful magics in the game.
- Where to find it:
- You can win them from the card player in the Galbadia D-District Prison. You can also find some during the Chocobo Forest side quest.
- Item Usage:
- Raises the HP of one character.
- Where to find it:
- You can win them from the card player in the Galbadia D-District Prison.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the ability: Mag +40%
- Where to find it:
- You can purchase them from the shop in Esthar.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Quistis the Blue Magic Limit Break ability Fire Breath.
- Where to find it:
- Inferno Fangs are picked up by defeating Ruby Dragons and Hexadragons which can be found on the Island Closest to Hell. Click on the link for more information.
- Item Usage:
- Used to create Selphie’s weapon, Crescent Wish, and can be refined into Life magic and Mega Phoenixs.
- Where to find it:
- Life Rings can be obtained from Mesmerize monsters. Mesmerize is the monster picture on the Triple Triad card to the right. You can find Mesmerizes in and around the Trabia region near Trabia Garden.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the ability: Luck-J allowing character to junction magic to the Luck stat. Luck affects a character’s likelihood of hitting with an attack unless they already have 255% hit (Squall starts off already having 255% hit), evasion and chance of getting a critical hit. Thus, being able to junction magic to improve Luck is incredibly useful.
- Where to find it:
- You can refine 100x Curse Spikes into a [Luck-J Scroll].
- Item Usage:
- Raises the Luck stat of a character. Luck affects a characters likelihood of hitting with an attack unless they already have 255% hit (Squall starts off already having 255% hit), evasion and chance of getting a critical hit.
- Where to find it:
- You can win one from the card player in the Galbadia D-District Prison.
- Item Usage:
- Raises a characters compatibility with all Guardian Forces.
- Where to find it:
- You can find one in Lunatic Pandora.
- Item Usage:
- M-Stone Pieces can be refined into numerous types of magic including Thunder, Blizzard, Fire, Cure, Slow, Silence, Esuna, Thundara, Blizzara, Fira, Cura, Thundaga, Blizzaga, Firaga and Curaga. They are also used in the creation of several character weapons.
- Where to find it:
- These can be found nearly everywhere in the game. If you really need to get your hands on an M-Stone Piece though you can refine Funguar and Bite Bug Cards into M-Stone Pieces.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Quistis a new Blue Magic Limit Break skill called Bad Breath and you will also need 6 to create Doomtrain.
- Where to find it:
- Information about finding Malboros can be found in the Doomtrain side quest section.
- Item Usage:
- Magic Stones are used in the creation of several weapons and can be refined into the following magic: Thundara, Blizzara, Fira, Cura, Haste, Berserk, Dispel, Thundaga, Blizzaga, Firaga and Curaga.
- Where to find it:
- Magic Stones are found nearly everywhere and are one of the most common drops.
- Item Usage:
- Use the lamp to initiate a battle against Diablos. If you successfully defeat Diablos he will join you as a Guardian Force.
- Where to find it:
- Received from Headmaster Cid just prior to the Timber SeeD mission.
- Item Usage:
- Revives all KO’d party members. Hopefully an item that you never have to use.
- Where to find it:
- You can win one from the card player in the Galbadia D-District Prison.
- Item Usage:
- Restores the HP of all party members by 1,000.
- Where to find it:
- You can win one from the card player in the Galbadia D-District Prison.
- Item Usage:
- Using a Meteor Stone in battle allows you to use Meteor magic. Meteor Stones can also be refined into Meteor Magic, which is one of the most powerful magics in the game.
- Where to find it:
- You can find some during the Chocobo Forest side quest.
- Item Usage:
- Used to create one of Squall’s weapons (Cutting Trigger) and one of Rinoa’s weapons (Cardinal). Mesmerize blades can also be refined into Regen magic and Elixirs.
- Where to find it:
- The only creature in the game which drops Mesmerize Blades is Mesmerize (big surprise!). Mesmerize is the monster picture on the Triple Triad card to the right. You can find Mesmerizes in and around the Trabia region near Trabia Garden.
- Item Usage:
- Used to create Irvine’s most powerful weapon, Exeter.
- Where to find it:
- You can obtain Moon Stones by battling and defeating Elnoyles, Imps and Toramas.
- Item Usage:
- Used to teach Quistis the Blue Magic Limit Break Acid.
- Where to find it:
- Mystery Fluid are dropped by Gaylas which can be found anywhere in the Trabia region (near Trabia Garden, for example).
- Item Usage:
- Used to teach Quistis the Blue Magic Limit Break Acid.

- The Occult Fan magazines give you information on where and how to find PuPu. Instead of using these magazines though you should use the UFO & PuPu guide. You do not need any of the Occult Fan magazines to complete the PuPu side quest.

- Can be found in the Library of Balamb Garden.

- Retrieved from the secret room by challenging the man in the Dollet pub.
- Item Usage:
- The Occult Fan magazines give you information on where and how to find PuPu. Instead of using these magazines though you should use the UFO & PuPu guide. You do not need any of the Occult Fan magazines to complete the PuPu side quest.
- Where to find it:
- Received as a gift from the fisherman at the bottom of the ladder in Fisherman’s Horizon.
- Item Usage:
- The Occult Fan magazines give you information on where and how to find PuPu. Instead of using these magazines though you should use the UFO & PuPu guide. You do not need any of the Occult Fan magazines to complete the PuPu side quest.
- Where to find it:
- Obtained in Esthar after speaking with a few people around the city. Head over to the Esthar section of the strategy guide for more information.
- Item Usage:
- Ochu Tentacles can be converted into Eye Drops, refined into Blind magic and are used in the creation of Quistis’ weapon, Red Scorpion.
- Where to find it:
- Ochu’s can be found in the Training Center of Balamb Garden and in the regions surrounding Trabia.
- Item Usage:
- Restores the HP of all of your Guardian Forces - similar to what a Tent does for your characters.
- Where to find it:
- Can be purchased at any Pet Shop or found on the third floor of the Galbadia D-District Prison.
- Item Usage:
- Allows you to change the name of your pet (Angelo), so pretty much one of the most useless items in the game.
- Where to find it:
- Found on the second floor of the Galbadia D-District Prison.
- Item Usage:
- Allows Angelo to learn Angelo Strike. Click on the following link for more information on Rinoa’s Limit Break, Combine.
- Where to find it:
- Zell gives you this magazine during your train ride to Timber.
- Item Usage:
- Allows Angelo to learn Angelo Recover. Click on the following link for more information on Rinoa’s Limit Break, Combine.
- Where to find it:
- This magazine can be found in Rinoa’s room in the train after you receive the explanation on how to complete the Great Train Robbery.
- Item Usage:

- This magazine can be purchased from the shop in Timber.

- Where to find it:

- Using a Phoenix Pinion in battle will summon Phoenix. Phoenix is not a Guardian Force per se, but it will revive and KO’d party members and after you use one in battle there will be a 25% chance that Phoenix will return any time all of your party members are KO’d, so use the Phoenix Pinion early!
- Where to find it:
- You can find one in Lunatic Pandora.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Quistis a new Blue Magic Limit Break ability, Ray Bomb.
- Where to find it:
- You can find one inside Lunatic Pandora.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the ability: Str +40%.
- Where to find it:
- You can purchase these from Rinrin’s shop in Esthar.
- Item Usage:
- Using a Protect Stone in battle allows you to use Protect magic. Protect Stones can also be refined into Protect Magic. Protect magic provides a character with temporarily high resistance to physical attacks.
- Where to find it:
- You can find some during the Chocobo Forest side quest.
- Item Usage:
- The strongest ammo type in the game that Irvine uses for his Limit Break, Shot.
- Where to find it:
- Can be refined from Energy Crystals.
- Item Usage:
- Used to create Squall’s weapon, Twin Lance, and can be refined into fire magics.
- Where to find it:
- You can obtain Red Fangs by defeating Hexadragons and Chimeras on the Island Closest to Hell.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the HP+20% ability.
- Where to find it:
- Regen Rings are dropped by Mesmerize monsters which can be found in and around the Esthar region.
- Item Usage:
- Allows you to rename any of your Guardian Forces. Not very useful at all…
- Where to find it:
- One is given to you by Zone on the White SeeD Ship and one can be one from one of the inmates in the Galbadia D-District Prison.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a GF the Ability “Abilityx4” and is one of the most important and useful items in the game. Do not pass up on the very rare opportunities in the game to pick one up.
- Where to find it:
- You can win one from the card player in the Galbadia D-District Prison.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the Magic+60% ability.
- Where to find it:
- Can be mugged from Edea during the battle at the end of the second disc.
- Item Usage:
- Saw Blades are used in the creation of Rinoa’s weapon, Rising Sun, and can be refined into Death magic and Dispel magic.
- Where to find it:
- Saw Blades are dropped by Belhelmel and can be refined from Belhelmel Cards (shown in the picture).
- Item Usage:
- Screws are used to create many of the early weapons in the game.
- Where to find it:
- Screws are dropped from and can be mugged from Geezards, which are the monster shown in the Triple Triad card to the right. You probably have seen several of these monsters already, but if you’re looking to track one down you can head to the area surrounding Balamb or Dollet.
- Item Usage:
- Sharp Spikes are needed to create many of the best weapons in the game, including:
- Quistis’ Slaying Tail
- Quistis’ ultimate weapon, Save the Queen
- Rinoa’s Cardinal
- Selphie’s Morning Star
- Selphie’s Crescent Wish - Where to find it:
- You can battle Armadodos, Death Claws and Grand Mantis’ in Centra to obtain Sharp Spikes.
- Item Usage:
- Shear feathers can be refined into Aero magic and Tornado magic and are also used to create Rinoa’s weapon, Valkyrie.
- Where to find it:
- Shear Feathers are dropped by Thrustaevis and Death Claws.
- Item Usage:
- Using a Shell Stone in battle allows you to use Shell magic. Shell Stones can also be refined into Shell Magic. Shell magic provides a character with temporarily high resistance to magic based attacks.
- Where to find it:
- You can find some during the Chocobo Forest side quest.
- Item Usage:
- The Solomon Ring is one of the items you must obtain in order to create one of the Guardian Forces, Doomtrain. Head over to the Doomtrain Guardian Force side quest section for more information about the different materials required to create Doomtrain.
- Where to find it:
- Picked up in Tear’s Point on the ground near the large statue with the harp at the back.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the Spd-J ability.
- Where to find it:
- One can be found inside Lunatic Pandora.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches Quistis the Blue Magic Limit Break ability, Ultra Waves.
- Where to find it:
- You can pick Spider Webs up off of Caterchipillars (pictured on the Triple Triad Card to the right) which can be found nearly everywhere.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the SumMag+20% ability. Star Fragments are used in the production of many of the best weapons in the game, including:
- Squall’s Punishment
- Irvine’s ultimate weapon, Exeter
- Selphie’s ultimate weapon, Strange Vision - Where to find it:
- Star Fragments are dropped by Anaconduars, Chimeras, Hexadragons, Iron Giants, Ruby Dragons, T-Rexaurx and Tri-Faces. The best place to pick them up late in the game is to head to Esthar and find Iron Giants.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the ST-Def-Jx4 ability.
- Where to find it:
- You can win one from Tiamat in Ultimecia’s Castle and you can obtain one as the reward for completing the Shumi Village side quest.
- Item Usage:
- Steel Orbs are used in the creation of Selphie’s weapon, Morning Star and can be refined into Demi magic.
- Where to find it:
- You can obtain Steel Orbs by defeating Wendigos, or by refining Wendigo Triple Triad cards into Steel Orbs.
- Item Usage:
- Steel Pipes are used in many weapon upgrades and you will need six of them to create Doomtrain.
- Where to find it:
- Make your way back to the Galbadia Garden area and find the nearby forest. You can Mug Steel Pipes from Wendigos.
- Item Usage:
- Raises the strength of any character that you use it on.
- Where to find it:
- You can find one on the second floor of the Galbadia D-District Prison. You can win one from Fujin and Raijin on when you fight them on the Lunatic Pandora. You can mug 4 of them from Mobile Type 8 aboard the Lunatic Pandora as well.
- Item Usage:
- Restores the HP of all characters and removes any status effects. Can only be used at a Save Point or on the world map.
- Where to find it:
- Can be purchased at most shops.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the Expendx3-1 ability which allows you to use Triple magic and only use 1 magic for each cast.
- Where to find it:
- You can pick up a Three Stars during the battle against Ultima Weapon in the Deep Sea Research Center or by completing the Obel Lake side quest.
- Item Usage:
- Each Timber Maniacs magazine you read will add a new section to the biography area of the study panel in Balamb Garden. Not a very useful prize, unfortunately…
- Where to find it:
- Timber Maniacs magazines are found throughout your journeys.
- Item Usage:
- Teaches a Guardian Force the Vit+20% ability. It is also one of the materials needed to create two of Squall’s weapons, Flame Saber and Punishment.
- Where to find it:
- You can obtain a Turtle Shell by battling an Armadodo or an Adamantoise (both of which are pictured on the Triple Triad cards below):
- Item Usage:
- Using an Ultima Stone in battle allows you to use Ultima magic. Ultima Stones can also be refined into Ultima Magic, which is the most powerful magic in the game.
- Where to find it:
- You can find some during the Chocobo Forest side quest.
- Item Usage:
- Raises the vitality of any character that you use it on.
- Where to find it:
- You can mug 4 of them from Mobile Type 8 aboard the Lunatic Pandora.
- Item Usage:
- Read through the magazine and each of the weapons listed will now appear in the Junk Shop even if you do not have the necessary materials to create those weapons. You can actually create each of the weapons without having this magazine in your possession though.
- Where to find it:
- Found in Squall’s dorm room after the dance scene at Balamb Garden (click on the link to go to that section of the strategy guide).
- Item Usage:

Unfortunately if you missed it during that part of the game you will have to purchase it from the Esthar Book Store. If you visited the book store already you just pull it up using Tonberry’s Call Shop ability.

- Found in the sewer area of Deling City outside the Presidential Palace.
- Item Usage:
- Windmills can be refined into Tornado magic which is one of the most powerful magic types in the game. 2 Windmills are required to create Rinoa’s ultimate weapon, Shooting Star.
- Where to find it:
- Dropped by Thrustaevis’ which can be found in and around the Galbadia area in the plains.
- Item Usage:
- You can use nearly all refining abilities on a Wizard Stone to refine it into high level magic including Thundaga, Blizzaga, Firaga, Curaga, Stop, Bio and Dispell.
- Where to find it:
- Many enemies across the world drop Wizards Stones including Elnoyle, Gesper, Geezard, Funguar, Buel and Caterchipillar (as long as they are all of high enough level).
