Tonberry, just like Master Tonberry and Don Tonberry, has an attack called “Karma,” which can do a fairly high amount of damage. Tonberry isn’t as strong as Don Tonberry or Master Tonberry. The formula for the damage done by “Karma” is as follows:
Damage = (Total Number of Enemies Defeated by Target) * 10
Other than being prepared to take a ton of damage, there isn’t too much in the way of strategy for defeating a Tonberry. Keep attacking until you bring it down.
If you’re having trouble, you can have Yuna summon an Aeon once Tonberry gets close enough, or have Wakka use 
Sleep Buster. A Tonberry won’t counterattack when it is asleep, which will significantly reduce the amount of damage that it does.

You can find them anywhere inside the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth. That said, they are very rare. Many players report successfully encountering more Tonberries in the green rooms of the cave.
