Through the Maelstrom

XXX

The Naldia Narrow

This next Main Scenario Quest kicks off with a few more cutscenes. Eventually, you’ll find yourself in control of Clive aboard Barnabas’s pursuing ship. There are two groups of soldiers to deal with when you start. The first is a group of four Royal Osfreyr, followed by a group of four more that includes a spellcaster (Royal Gandfreyr) that will come from around the corner.

XXX

After defeating all of the enemies, you’ll have to deal with another Royal Tognvaldr (ninja-type enemy), which is annoying with your multi-target Eikonic Ability Set active, but even after this fight, leave your multi-target abilities active for now.

XXX

Look for a door on the opposite side of the ship from where you spawned. Search the area on the other side of the stairs for a treasure coffer that contains a Meteorite, and then head up the stairs and go through the gate.

You’ll have two more groups of enemies to fight on the upper deck of the ship. These groups include spellcasters that you should focus on first, and the second wave also consists of another Royal Sveithvaldr (axe-wielding type) enemy.

XXX

There are no treasure coffers on this top deck, but there are two Glimmer spots on the bow and the stern of the ship. Once you’ve collected them, look for a gated set of stairs towards the back of the boat. It looks very similar to the one you used to climb up to this level.

XXX

Go down the stairs to find two more Glimmer spots and another treasure coffer that contains The Breath of Earth (Earthen Fury). Climb down the nearby ladder to the level below, pick up the Glimmer, and head through the door to find another group of soldiers to fight. It can be challenging to group these up in the lower decks of the ship, but try your best.

Before you go through the last door in this room, save your game, and swap over to your single-target Eikonic Ability Set. It’s time for your next boss battle!

Barnabas
Boss Battle
XXX

Barnabas has a very high HP pool, but don’t worry; this battle ends before you defeat him, so you won’t have to chip away at it for too long. His moves include:

Vertical Magic Blade Slash:
This is the first attack that Barnabas does at the start of every battle. He will hold his blade up with two hands as it begins glowing and then slash downwards, emitting a large magic energy wave that pushes towards Clive. This attack is easily countered with Heatwave. Time your counter for when Barnabas swings downward with the blade because the magic wave advances quickly.

Physical Blade Attacks:
Barnabas employs several physical attacks that involve lunging or slashing with his blade. These are all well telegraphed, and each of them is just a single attack by itself, so they are easy to dodge.

Counterattack:
At times, Barnabas will begin deflecting Clive’s blade attacks. If he deflects three attacks, he will counterattack with a wide horizontal swing. You can either stop attacking while he is deflecting your blows or dodge his horizontal counterattack and swing at him with another counterattack of your own.

Dancing Steel (Lite):
Barnabas will crouch down as though he’s about to pull his weapon (Odin’s Sword) out of its sheath. Rotate around behind him before he unsheathes his weapon; otherwise, this miniature version of Dancing Steel will hit Clive a few times in succession. Barnabas has a lengthy recovery time after using this attack, even if he doesn’t connect, so take the opportunity once you get behind him to unleash a combo of attacks.

The Lord’s Measure:
The words “The Lord’s Measure” will appear on the screen for this attack, along with blue and red energy beams running in parallel and perpendicular lines. Escape into an area that isn’t in these energy beams to escape the damage.

XXX

Once Barnabas has lost some HP, he will begin “Readying Iron Flash…” At this point, there are some minor changes to his attack pattern.

Iron Flash:
The words “Readying Iron Flash…” will appear on the screen as Barnabas begins charging his most powerful attack. Once he does, he will follow it up with another “The Lord’s Measure” attack, but this one will cover most of the battlefield, making it a bit tougher to find a safe area to stand. He will then use a follow-up attack, which will either be another “The Lord’s Measure” again or “Gungnir,” followed by a ‘Double Magic Blade Slash.’ Both of these new attacks are outlined below.

Gungnir:
Barnabas will float up in the air as his new Gungnir weapon lights up, and then he will throw it at wherever Clive is currently standing. There’s a short ripple outwards after it lands, so it’s usually best to wait for the Gungnir spear to land rather than trying to dodge too early, as you’ll end up getting hit by the ripple.

Double Magic Blade Slash:
This is the same attack as the “Vertical Magic Blade Slash,” except Barnabas will follow up the vertical magic blade with a follow-up swing horizontally, just like other horizontal magical slash attacks you’ve seen. Dodge the first burst of magic and counterattack the second one with Heatwave (if you counterattack the first wave, the second wave is likely to hit you).

Physical Blade Attacks:
Most importantly, if you’re attempting to earn the Medal of Valor, all of Barnabas’ old physical attacks, which used to be just one sword swing or just one sword thrust, are now double attacks. Be ready to dodge the first attack and then the second one right after. If you go in too early, Barnabas will counter and retaliate with an attack of his own.

You can earn a Medal of Valor from this fight, and it’s not too difficult to do compared to some of the previous fights. Check out the video below if you’re having trouble.

A video demonstration of how to successfully complete the fight against Barnabas.

There are many cutscene videos to watch after the fight. This wraps up the “Through the Maelstrom” Main Scenario Quest, though, and it’s on to the next chapter. Select the Hideaway from the world map.
