ATB and Chain Attacks
Final Fantasy X-2 doesn’t introduce anything out of the ordinary when it comes to the battle system. It borrows many elements from its predecessor, Final Fantasy X.
Combat Turns and Rounds
Combat flows in turns and rounds. Each character has an ATB gauge, which you can see filling up in the bottom right corner of the screen. When the bar is full, they’ll be able to perform an action in battle. It seems pretty straightforward, but here are some important things to be aware of:
Many Dresspheres have auto abilities that can be learned, which help to speed up the casting process, such as
Items Lv. 2 or
White Magic Lv. 2.

Chain Attacks
If you have two or three of your characters complete their attacks, spells, or abilities in quick succession, you’ll see a “Chain Attack” message appear on the screen. Each Chain Attack you deal increases the damage dealt to the enemy, so you should try to optimize your attacks so that all three characters attack in unison where possible to increase their damage.

Building up a Chain Attack can continue endlessly, though it’s difficult with regular attacks. It’s quite easy to do, however, with a
Gunner using
Trigger Happy if they’ve learned the
Trigger Happy Lv. 2 and
Trigger Happy Lv. 3 abilities. Check out the video below for more information:

The attacks don’t have to happen at the exact same time. You just need to make sure the second attack lands before the enemy’s posture recovers and their ATB gauge keeps climbing. The other benefit that this provides is that a recovering enemy can’t dodge the next incoming attack; their Evasion stat temporarily drops to zero.
The attack increase is as follows:
| Display | Multiplier | Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| (first hit) | 1.00× | |
| Chain x 1! | 1.45× | +45% |
| Chain x 2! | 1.50× | +50% |
| Chain x 3! | 1.55× | +55% |
| Chain x 10! | 1.90× | +90% |
| Chain x 20! | 2.40× | +140% |
