Overview

Most fans of the Final Fantasy series won’t need an explanation of how the Black Mage Dressphere works, and there are really no surprises with it in this game either. It is essentially Lulu’s role from Final Fantasy X brought into this game in a different form.

The Black Mage role isn’t ranked very high because it’s only useful in specific situations. There are few fights in the game where using elemental magic can be really helpful, but this is far overshadowed by how many fights you’ll be thrown into where the enemy has no elemental weakness and magic spells are not overly effective. Couple this with the fact that your character will slowly run out of MP, and now you’ve got multiple reasons piling up not to use them.

Additionally, for some reason in Final Fantasy X-2, there seem to be a lot more fights where the enemy is capable of draining your party member’s MP, exacerbating an already irritating issue.

How to Obtain It

Technically, you obtain the Songstress Dressphere first, and in the HD Remaster of the game, the Festivalist Dressphere is given to you early too, but the Black Mage Dressphere is the first one you truly ‘earn.’ It’s earned at the end of the Floating Ruins sequence at the beginning of the game.
