Festivalist
A festival-themed Dressphere exclusive to the HD Remaster and International versions of the game. It combines weak physical attacks with a set of elemental or status abilities that is different for each character.
Overview
The Festivalist is one of two Dresspheres added in the International release, which is how they reached the HD Remaster, and it is the weaker of the two by a wide margin. Every character shares the same core set of fireworks:
Spinner deals damage and inflicts Confusion,
Popper is a plain single-target attack,
Fountain hits every enemy, and
Twinkler restores the user’s HP and clears her status ailments. None of these deal enough damage to compete with a
Warrior or a
Black Mage, let alone the Dresspheres you pick up later in the game.
What makes the Festivalist unusual is that the rest of its ability list depends on who is wearing it, much like the
Mascot. Yuna gets the Sandals, a set of elemental attacks that hit every enemy but produce a random effect each time they are used, all the way up to
Ultima Sandals. Rikku gets the Fish, a set of dependable three-hit elemental attacks against a single target that ends with
Holy Fish. Paine gets the Masks, physical attacks that add Silence, Darkness, Poison, or Sleep to a hit, and eventually Stop and Petrification.
The Dressphere’s stat spread does it no favors either. It grows HP, MP, Strength, Magic, and Agility reasonably well, but its Defense, Evasion, and Luck are among the worst in the game, which is why every version of it comes with
SOS Regen and
SOS Wall to keep the character standing once her HP runs low. Rikku’s Fish are the most usable of the three sets, and Paine’s Masks can be handy against a fiend that is vulnerable to a specific status, but there is no situation where a Festivalist is the best tool for the job.
How to Obtain It
The Festivalist is available from the very start of the game in the HD Remaster and International versions. It is not included in the original PlayStation 2 release. Check out the opening section of the walkthrough for more information:
