Dark Knight
An even more powerful Warrior with very high physical and magical defenses, powerful attacks, and abilities that provide immunity to many status effects.
Lore
You may have caught it already, but Yuna wields a slightly recolored version of Tidus’
Caladbolg and Rikku wields Auron’s
Masamune from Final Fantasy X, while Paine wields her own unique sword not seen in the previous game. This same pattern holds true for their
Warrior weapons.
Overview
The Dark Knight Dressphere is one of the strongest Dresspheres in the game, and it’s easy to use. Unlike the
Psychic Dressphere, which gains its strengths from using certain powerful abilities at the right time, the Dark Knight has strong defensive stats as soon as you start using it. Its high Defense and Magic Defense make it capable of surviving many of the more powerful attacks you’ll face towards the back half of the story.
Beyond that, though, it’s also one of the strongest attackers in the game. Right from the beginning, the Dark Knight’s regular
Attack will give it a higher damage output than most other Dresspheres in the game, but then you add on powerful moves like
Darkness, and you wind up with a role that is capable of doing everything.
Darkness has one downside, which is that it also deals some damage to the Dark Knight using it (1⁄8 HP), but the damage it deals to enemies is well worth the trade-off. This is especially true with multiple enemies on the battlefield because Darkness hits all enemies, and it’s a special attack that ignores high Defense and Magic Defense. It’ll just rip through strong enemy defenses.
Pair one or two Dark Knights with an
Alchemist who can continuously heal all party members by using a
Mega-Potion from their stash, and add in some of the additional defenses that a Dark Knight can learn, such as
Poisonproof,
Stoneproof, etc., and you’ve got an unstoppable tank that can carry you through the entire game.
In fact, many players and guides recommend two Dark Knights and an Alchemist as the strongest party combination (aside from using
Mascots, of course).
How to Obtain It
You can pick up the Dark Knight Dressphere during the visit to Bevelle in Chapter 2, but there is a sequence of steps that you need to complete towards the end of the “Bevelle Underground” area before you’ll be able to grab the treasure chest that contains it. Check out the walkthrough section for more information:

If you forgot to grab this Dressphere in Bevelle, you can still go back and grab it. The treasure chest will still be there when you return to the Bevelle Underground in a later chapters, and the same sequence of lifts and switches opens the way to it.
