Magic Junction Guide
I would like to start off by pointing out that Quistis gives a very well organized and in-depth instructional guide on the basics of junctioning magic to your characters and it is highly recommended that you follow her explanation, especially if this is your first time playing Final Fantasy VIII.
You can view her tutorial again if you skipped it by selecting “Tutorial” section under the “Online Help” section shown in the screenshots below.
When you junction a Guardian Force to a character it allows that character to make use of any abilities that Guardian Force has learned. If a Guardian Force has learned a Junction Ability the character will then be able to junction magic to a particular character stat. Guardian Forces can learn the following Junction Abilities:
|HP-J||Junctions magic to character’s Hit Point stat.|
|Str-J||Junctions magic to character’s Strength stat.|
|Vit-J||Junctions magic to character’s Vitality stat.|
|Mag-J||Junctions magic to character’s Magic stat.|
|Spr-J||Junctions magic to character’s Spirit stat.|
|Spd-J||Junctions magic to character’s Speed stat.|
|Eva-J||Junctions magic to character’s Evade stat.|
|Hit-J||Junctions magic to character’s Hit stat.|
|Luck-J||Junctions magic to character’s Luck stat.|
|Elem-Atk-J||Junctions magic to character’s Elemental Attack. However, only magic with elemental attributes can be junctioned.|
|Elem-Def-J||Junctions magic to character’s Elemental Defense. However, only magic that defends against elemental attributes can be junctioned.|
|Elem-Defx2||Character is able to junction 2 types of magic to Elemental Defense. Even if you junction a GF with both Elem-Defx2 and Elem-Def-J, it does not change the number of junctionable magic from 2.|
|Elem-Defx4||Character is able to junction 4 types of magic to Elemental Defense. Even if you junction a GF with both Elem-Defx4 and Elem-Defx2, it does not change the number of junctionable magic from 4.|
|ST-Atk-J||Junctions magic to Status Attack. However, only attack magic that can induce status change can be junctioned.|
|ST-Def-J||Junctions magic to Status Defense. However, only magic (attack and defense) that can induce status change can be junctioned.|
|ST-Defx2||Junctions 2 magic to Status Defense. Even if you junction a GF with ST-Def-J, it does not change the number of junctionable magic from 2.|
|ST-Defx4||Junctions 4 magic to Status Defense, but it doesn’t combine with ST-Def-J. Even if you junction a GF with ST-Defx2, it does not change the number of junctionable magic from 4.|
|Abilityx3||Sets 3 Party and/or Character Abilities to a character.|
|Abilityx4||Sets 4 Party and/or Character Abilities to a character. Even if you junction a GF with Abilityx3, it does not change the number of abilities that can be set from 4.|
Once you have junctioned a Guardian Force to a character (as Quistis explains in the tutorial) you can then junction magic to any of the “Junction Abilities” (listed above) that it has learned. Each different magic in the game has a different impact on which ability you junction it to.
For example, if you junction Cure magic to your Strength stat (listed as Str in the game) it will increase that stat by 4. However, if you junction Fire magic to your strength stat it will increase strength by 10. This means that Fire is a much better magic to junction to your Strength (Str) stat.
So you do find out which magic is best to junction to each character stat? Thankfully you do not have to go through the process of tediously testing each of the magics in each stat. There is an option to automatically junction the best magic to each stat in the game for you to utilize at any time.
Enter the main menu and select the “Junction” option. Move the cursor over and select the “Auto” option (after you have junctioned Guardian Forces to the character). You then select whether you want to focus on attack stats, magic stats or defense stats. The best bet is to always select “Atk”. Selecting attack does not mean that you defense stats will be entirely neglected, but as the old adage goes, “the best defense is a good offense”.
The best magics in the game include Full-Life, Ultima, Meltdown, Meteor, Curaga, Triple, Double, Tornado and Aura and in order to maximize the effectiveness of your character you are going to want to make sure that you acquire all of these magics. So where do you get them?
|Full-Life||The easiest way to stock up on Full-Life magic is to draw it from Fujin during the battle against Raijin and Fujin aboard the Lunatic Pandora at the end of disc 3. You can also use Siren’s L-Mag RF ability on Regen Rings to convert them into 20 Full-Life magics. You can also find draw points on the Island Closest to Hell (more info below).|
|Ultima||You can refine 3 Ultima from an Energy Crystals which are normally quite difficult to find. However, if you utilize the Unlimited Elnoyle battles trick you can pick up a ton of the Energy Crystals that they drop.|
|Meltdown||Use Leviathan’s Supt Mag-RF ability to convert Mystery Fluids into Meltdowns.|
|Meteor||The easiest way to stock on Meteor magic is to draw it directly from Ruby Dragons (like the one Laguna and Kiros fought in the mountains). You can find plenty of Ruby Dragons on the Island Closest to Hell (more information on the Island is below).|
|Curaga||Curaga magic can be picked up almost anywhere. You can use Siren’s L Mag-RF ability to convert a Wizard Stone into 5 Curagas.|
|Triple||You can draw Triple magic form draw points on the Island Closest to Hell (more information below) or you can refine 10 Double magic into 1 Triple magic. More information about Double magic is below.|
|Double||Double Magic can be created by refining a Dragon Fin.|
|Tornado||The best way to stock up on Tornado magic is to use High Mag-RF to convert 10 Aero magic into 1 Tornado magic or you can stock up on Windmills. Windmills can be refined using T Mag-RF into 10x Tornado.|
|Aura||You can refine a Fury Fragment into 5 Aura magic.|
The Island Closest to Hell
The Island Closest to Hell is highlighted on the map above and contains some of the highest level monsters in the game. It is a great place to stock up on high level magic. If you continue pressing “X" as you wander around the island on the World Map you have a good chance of finding one of the many hidden draw points. The hidden draw points usually have some of the best magic in the game including the magic listed above.
