A Chance Encounter

The Nysa Defile

Two important tutorial messages pop up after the cutscenes have concluded for this next section of the game. The first lets you know that the Eikonic Abilities that were previously covered by a lock icon on the Abilities tab have been unlocked. You can now spend your Ability Points to unlock new Abilities such as Scarlet Cyclone or Heatwave.

The second tutorial message pops up when you open the “Abilities” tab. It provides a run-through of how to cycle between Ability Sets. This new feature isn’t too important yet, but it will be a key strategic function you’ll be making use of as you progress through the game, as outlined in the helpful hint below.

You can now use two abilities in battle that are already pre-equipped to Clive: Rising Flames, which you’ve already been using up to this point, and Scarlet Cyclone, which is a brand new ability assigned to the PlayStation R2 Button + PlayStation Triangle Button slot. Scarlet Cyclone deals a high amount of damage to a group of enemies surrounding Clive when he casts it.

Two more abilities have been unlocked:

  • Heatwave, which allows you to counterattack projectiles and launch a wall of fire at the enemy.
  • Flames of Rebirth, the most powerful Ability tied to the Phoenix Eikon. It costs a ton of Ability Points to unlock and has a lengthy cooldown, but it can be used to restore some of Clive’s HP.

Because you won’t have enough Ability Points to unlock Flames of Rebirth yet, the other ability we should consider is Heatwave. It’s strongly recommended that you unlock this ability and begin using this Ability straight away. It allows Clive to counterattack any projectiles fired his way by an enemy, which happens all the time, including in the upcoming fight, but if you manage to counterattack a projectile properly, this ability will significantly drain the enemy’s Will Gauge/Stagger Meter.

The upcoming battle includes a lengthy fight against a single target, but also a few groups of enemies at the start, so most of the currently available abilities in the Phoenix tree will be at least somewhat useful.

Follow the pathway along, jumping up the cliffs and picking up the Glimmers along the way. The Glimmers contain two Stoneskin Tonic and two Strength Tonics. You will eventually reach your teammates, perched over the edge of the cliff. A few more cutscenes before we jump into our next…

Shiva’s Dominant
Boss Battle
XXX

Shiva’s Dominant starts the battle accompanied by 2 Ironblood Commanders and 4 Ironblood Crusaders. These enemies are pushovers, and it’s pretty easy to tear through them before moving on to Shiva’s Dominant, despite what your companions (Tiamat and Aevis) suggest at the beginning of the fight. Just keep an eye on Shiva’s Dominant as she will sometimes cast low-level spells at Clive during this stage.

Once the Ironbloods have been dispatched with, Shiva’s Dominant will begin using her full arsenal of abilities. This includes:

Standard Attack:
Shiva’s Dominant has two standard attacks, both of which will have her fly across the screen towards Clive and giving you time to dodge with PlayStation R1 Button. She will float up off the ground just before she drives forward towards you. The second version of this attack is slightly faster and includes an additional icy flash during the attack. Otherwise, it’s very similar.

Ice Bolt (x1) and Ice Bolt (x3):
These two abilities are fairly similar except that the casting time for the triple Ice Bolt is a lot longer, giving you more time to counterattack it using Heatwave.

Ice Nova:
This is an area of effect attack that deals damage all around Shiva’s Dominant. You will know she is using this attack when the ground around her glows light blue. You may also notice your companions jumping backward to avoid the attack. Just move away slightly and jump back in as soon as she’s done casting it.

Blizzaga:
This attack causes lots of large chunks of ice to fall onto the ground. The areas that they will hit will glow light blue colored. These can be dodged relatively easily by continually pressing the PlayStation R1 Button button, which will help you move out of their way as they fall and help you potentially dodge them if one makes contact.

Ice Age:
There are two versions of this spell, one where ice will spike up from the ground and another where ice will fall from the sky, but they both operate the same. The ground will illuminate to a light blue color in a line stretching out from Shiva’s Dominant. Just jump out of this line quickly to dodge the attack.

Successfully dodging some of Shiva’s Dominants’ attacks can be tricky until you are familiar with the various attack animations. But don’t spend too much time struggling with this fight. You may take a fair bit of damage, but this section is still just the start of the game, where you’re supposed to be learning the various components of combat. Don’t strive for perfection just yet.

You can use the video below to give you an idea of how to dodge the attacks and successfully defeat Shiva’s Dominant.

Video Guide - Shiva’s Dominant
XXX

A video demonstration of how to successfully complete the fight against Shiva’s Dominant.

After receiving the battle spoils, another cutscene will trigger, and Clive will be thrown right into another battle. The battle against the Ironblood soldiers, followed by a battle against Tiamat, is pretty straightforward. He behaves exactly like Lord Commander Murdoch did during your training session. The only difference is that he can cast Ice Magic from a distance and gains access to an ability called “Enruin,” which will allow him to attack three times quickly in succession.

There are a few more cutscenes to watch, but this concludes this section of the strategy guide. Hover over The Hideaway on the map, press the PlayStation Cross or X Button button to travel there, and move to the next page.
