Medic

The Medic role is designed to act as your primary method of healing any injured characters. The alternative is to use restorative items, such as Potions, and there are situations where using items is the most effective route to recover HP without interrupting the flow of battle, but for the most part, you will be relying on a Medic.

Depending on the amount of damage coming at your party, it typically doesn’t make sense to leave one of your party members as a Medic for long. Instead, they should swap into and out of the Medic role as needed, and then into other helpful roles when your party member’s HP is fine (i.e. above 60-70%), like a Ravager, Synergist or Saboteur.

Of note, Medics are not capable of dealing any damage in their role, so it’s important not to have characters sticking around in this role for too long if they’re doing nothing. And its also worth noting that AI Controlled Characters in the Medic role will use smaller and quicker heals as their party members get closer to full HP, making it seem like they’re doing something when, in fact, they’re really not being all that impactful anymore…

The more Medics you have in your party, as noted in the Role Bonuses section below, the more healing that each of your party members will take, which means that swapping all of your party members to their Medic role at the same time will allow them to blast themselves all back up to nearly 100% HP extremely quickly.

Role Bonuses

Increasing the Role Level of a Medic (by activating Role Level crystals in a character’s Medic Crystarium) will increase the amount of healing done by healing spells by the Medic themself, but it will also increase the amount of healing received by nearby party members, according to the following chart:

Role Level Healing Effects (Self) Healing Effects (Allies)
1 x1.20 x1.03
2 x1.23 x1.03
3 x1.26 x1.06
4 x1.29 x1.06
5 x1.32 x1.10

AI Controlled Characters

Medics controlled by the AI will follow a very strict priority:

  1. They will heal any extremely low HP party members (focusing on the party leader and Sentinels)
  2. They will use [Raise] on any KO’d party members.
  3. They will cure status ailments using the Esuna ability.
  4. Finally, they will heal party members who are not at full HP.

The frustrating aspect of how the AI controls Medics though is that they will typically struggle to get a party member up to full HP as they will tend to use quickly and smaller heals if the target doesn’t require as much healing. As a result, it’s actually extremely rare that a party member will be healed to full.

As a result, it's recommended that you only allow AI Controlled Medics to heal party members up to anywhere around 80% HP before switching, as continued healing is of limited value.
