The Synergist role allows a character to cast beneficial spells, otherwise known as status enhancements or buffs, on their teammates. These enhancements serve a wide range of purposes including:

• Increasing damage dealt to enemies
• Applying elemental-statuses to attacks
• Reducing incoming damage received from enemies
• Increasing the speed of ATB Gauge replenishment (Haste)

During early battles in the game, switching your party members over to their Synergist role can prove entirely unnecessary just given how weak individual enemies might be and the time required to provide buffs before the enemies have been defeated. However, for longer or more difficult battles, not only will Synergist buffs be extremely helpful, they’re practically mandatory given just how beneficial they actually are.

This is a role where the most important buffs will be applied first, and then, as the battle progresses, the Synergist will only have access to buffs that are of limited value. Once all of the buffs that a Synergist can cast have been applied, they have no attacks available to them, so there is no point in keeping a character in the Synergist role for too long.

Depending on the character and their Crystarium, a Synergist may have access to a regular buff, such as Faith, or a more advanced version, such as Faithra. It's important to note that, while more advanced versions like Bravera or Faithra increase the effects of the buff, these advanced versions will wear off of the character they’ve been applied to much faster.

Role Bonuses

Increasing the Role Level of a Synergist (by activating Role Level crystals in a character’s Synergist Crystarium) will increase the length of time that buffs are applied both to the Synergist themselves and their accompanying party members. This will allow you to extend the time you have before they need to be reapplied. The durations will increase according to the following chart:

AI Controlled Characters

The Synergist, like Ravagers, are greatly impacted by the information that have been revealed about an enemy, either through having defeated that enemy previously or revealed by having one of your characters cast Libra on the target.

AI Controlled Synergists will apply buffs that have the greatest impact on their target’s current role; they will apply Bravery to Commandos, Faith to Ravagers, etc.They will also focus on enhancing attacks through status buffs like Enfire, Enwater and reducing damage through the use of buffs like Barthunder and Barfrost, all depending on the characteristics of the enemy they are facing.

There are no characters that have unique abilities associated with their Synergist role. However, while characters who function the strongest in the Synergist role (like Sazh and Hope) have access to the most status enhancement abilities, each character tends to have a unique assortment of abilities that they can learn and which they can apply to their teammates.
