Thief

The Thief uses a short-range physical attack that hits twice and can steal items from enemies and bosses. This role most closely resembles Rikku’s role from Final Fantasy X, which is probably why it’s her default Dressphere.

Overview

The ability to use Steal and to steal items from enemies and bosses is usually pretty important for most games in the Final Fantasy series. Admittedly, though, it’s less important in Final Fantasy X-2. Items rarely are worth going out of your way to steal, except in a few rare instances, which this guide flags at the appropriate time.

Additionally, you can get rid of the need to have a Thief active in your party to steal items once you get ahold of the Treasure Hunt Garment Grid. This will allow any character to use the Mug command, which both attacks and steals items from an enemy. You can also use Pilfer Gil on enemies to stack up Gil quickly, but even that has limited use in this game (and you won’t have any problem helping O’aka XXIII repay his debt).

That being said, there is one boss battle in the Via Infinito where you’ll want to make use of a Thief equipped with the Cat Nip accessory. Back in the original PlayStation 2 version of the game, Cat Nip was an overpowered accessory that caused all of a character’s attacks to hit for 9,999. It was overpowered because you could equip this to a Gunner who could use Trigger Happy to get off a flurry of attacks.

In the HD Remaster version of the game, however, the Cat Nip accessory also inflicts the Berserk negative status effect, preventing you from selecting any actions on the character you’ve equipped it to. This means that a Gunner will just use their regular attack. The benefit of using a Thief for this tactic is that they’ll still attack twice, hitting with each weapon for 9,999, even when under the influence of Berserk.

Lastly, a few times it helps to get the first attack off using the First Strike auto-ability.

How to Obtain It

This is one of the starting Dresspheres that you begin the game with.
