Commando
The Commando role makes use of physical attacks and some non-element based magic spells (like Ruin and
Ruinga) in order to deal damage to enemies.
The most important aspect of a Commando in battle though, and where it differs quite heavily from the other damage-dealing class, the Ravager, is that any attacks from the Commando will greatly reduce the rate at which an enemy’s Chain Gauge depletes. As a result, Commandos typically need to be used in tandem with a Ravager in order to effectively build a Chain Gauge.
There are a few instances where going all out with Ravager attacks, without the benefit of a Commando, can prove effective, but these instances are few and far between. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Saboteurs are also capable of preventing Chain Gauge depletion in the same way with their debilitating status attacks, but they are incapable of dealing out the heavy amounts of damage that a Commando can inflict. In fact, the amount of damage a Commando can do skyrockets when an enemy is Staggered.

Role Bonuses
Increasing the Role Level of a Commando (by activating Role Level crystals in a character’s Commando Crystarium) will increase the amount of damage that they deal as well as the damage dealt by the Commando’s party members, according to the following chart:
Role Level | Damage Boost (Self) | Damage Boost (Allies) |
---|---|---|
1 | x2.0 | x1.05 |
2 | x2.1 | x1.05 |
3 | x2.2 | x1.10 |
4 | x2.3 | x1.10 |
5 | x2.5 | x1.15 |

AI Controlled Characters
Switching your party members into the Commando role will cause them to automatically begin choosing their own targets. Having more than one Commando that is AI controlled will cause each of them to attack different targets, and this is strategically important because they are attempting to keep each enemy’s Chain Gauge from depleting too quickly.
AI Controlled Commandos will automatically select the attack that they believe will do the most damage in any given situation, including switching over to Area of Effect (AoE) abilities like Blitz or
Ruinga when the situation calls for it, although it should be noted that they quite often choose poorly when left to their own devices.
