Treasure Types
Final Fantasy XVI has two different types of treasure that you can obtain as you explore the maps across Valisthea. The first type is regular treasure coffers, which are similar to treasure chests in other Final Fantasy titles, shown in the screenshot below:

These treasure coffers can only be opened once and always contain the same type of treasure (depending on the difficulty mode you are playing). Each of these treasure coffers will be highlighted in the walkthrough strategy guide, and their locations will be marked on the accompanying location maps for each section.
Missable Treasure?
Warning
You can return to any of the areas you’ve previously visited to pick up a treasure coffer that you missed. If one of the coffers you missed was in a story portion of the game, you can head to the Arete Stone and use the “Stage Replay” mode to revisit those sections of the game. The treasure coffers will still be there, and any items you retrieve from them will remain in your inventory after you have completed the stage.
The second type of treasure you may see is a glimmering blue light that emanates from the ground. This treasure is typically referred to as “glimmers,” and while they are sometimes pointed out in the walkthrough, these glimmers are different from treasure coffers in two crucial ways:
- They contain lower quality items that are not as critical to pick up, including low-level crafting materials, small amounts of
Gil or
Potions
- They respawn after a certain amount of time, after which you can pick them up again
Their contents change based on your needs when you pick them up. For example, if you’re low on Potions, then that is what they will likely contain, like they’re attempting to refill your understocked inventory. If you’re full on potions, they will contain low-level crafting materials or small amounts of
Gil.

Glimmer Spots
The Glimmer spots you’ll spot as you travel throughout Valisthea are actually somewhat of a sore spot for many players of the game. These Glimmers will eventually respawn over time, allowing you to return to areas and collect more items. Additionally, they quite often provide you with specific items that you may be short on in your inventory, like Potions or
High Potions, when you need them.
So, why are they frustrating? While some of the Glimmer spots provide useful rewards, you’ll find that many of them contain tiny amounts of Gil, even as low as 5 to 10
Gil. That much Gil is not worth going out of your way for…
They are worth grabbing, though, if you don’t have to go too far out of your way, because you can use them to collect raw materials for crafting—items like Valley Madders,
Briar Clam Shells,
Desert Roses,
Sharp Fangs,
Bloody Hides, etc.

Spoils and Quest Rewards
The other method of obtaining rewards is to receive them as spoils at the end of battle or as a reward for completing an Optional Quest. These rewards are outlined in the walkthrough section, the Hunts section, and the Optional Quests section.
