This section covers all of the Abilities in Final Fantasy XVI, including both Core and Eikon Abilities. These Abilities can be unlocked using Ability Points on the “Abilities” tab of the main menu.

Details:
A close-range sword strike delivered in the air.
  • Up to three consecutive strikes can be chained into a combo.
  • Dodging will interrupt a combo.
  • Can parry enemy attacks when times precisely.

Burning Blade Hold PlayStation Square Button to imbue Clive’s blade with fire. Release to unleash a powerful attack.

Details:
Temporarily imbue Clive’s sword with the flames of the Phoenix, allowing for a stronger attack.
  • Can break an enemy’s guard.
  • Will lift smaller enemies when executed in midair.
  • Can parry enemy attacks when times precisely.
Mastery:
Reduces time required to imbue blade with fire.

Charged Magic Hold PlayStation Triangle Button to increase the potency of a magic spell. Release to cast.

Details:
Hold PlayStation Triangle Button to temporarily enhance a spell, increasing its potency.
  • Can break an enemy’s guard.
  • Will lift smaller enemies when executed in midair.
  • Spells can be charged at any time, regardless of recovery status.
Mastery:
Reduces charge time.

Master: 250
Dodge Use PlayStation R1 Button to move swiftly out of harm’s way.

Details:
Swiftly sidestep an incoming attack.
  • Can break an enemy’s guard.
  • Will lift smaller enemies when executed in midair.
  • Spells can be charged at any time, regardless of recovery status.
(None) This ability is learned and mastered by default.
Downthrust Use PlayStation Cross or X Button+PlayStation Square Button while in the air to slice down.

Details:
Deliver a plunging attack from the air, capable of striking an enemy multiple times based on the height from which it was executed.
  • Can parry enemy attacks when timed precisely.
Mastery:
Imbues blade with fire, increasing ability potency and range.

Jump Use PlayStation Cross or X Button to jump.

Details:
Jump to deal aerial attacks or reach the upper portions of larger enemies.
  • Use PlayStation Analog Left Stick while jumping to determine jump direction.
  • Tilt PlayStation Analog Left Stick jumping to drift, slightly extending jump distance.
(None) This ability is learned and mastered by default.
Limit Break Use PlayStation L3 Button+PlayStation R3 Button when the Limit Break gauge is filled to semi-prime, improving battle performance for a short period of time.

Details:
Temporarily improve attributes by channeling the power of Ifrit. This is also known as semi-priming.
  • Recommended for use after staggering an enemy or when Clive’s HP is low.
  • Duration is determined by the number of gauges full at time of execution.
  • Can be used at any time regardless of Clive’s recovery status.
  • Cannot be KO’d while semi-primed, even if HP is lowered to 0.
Attribute Bonuses:
  • Changes attack style.
  • Doubles spells.
  • Increases Charged Magic, Magic Burst, and Precision Shot potency by 10%.
  • Increases Eikonic Ability potency by 10%.
  • Slowly restores HP.
  • Increases Defense by 10%.
  • Prevent stagger when taking damage.
Upgrade:
Adds a third Limit Break gauge.

Mastery:
Adds a fourth Limit Break gauge.

Lunge Use PlayStation Cross or X Button+PlayStation Square Button to swiftly close in and attack a distant enemy.

Details:
Swiftly approach and strike a distant enemy.
  • Can parry enemy attacks when timed precisely.
Mastery:
Increases lunge distance. Ability potency increases with distance.

Master: 200
Magic Use PlayStation Triangle Button to launch an elementally aspected spell at a distant target.

Details:
A ranged spell that can reach distant or airborne enemies.
  • Can be cast while moving.
  • Elemental aspect is dependent on the currently attuned Eikon.

Magic Burst Use PlayStation Triangle Button immediately after landing a melee attack to deliver a close-ranged magic burst.

Details:
A localized elemental explosion triggered by casting a magic spell just as a melee attack lands.
  • Can parry enemy attacks when timed precisely.
Mastery:
Extends trigger window.
Master: 300
Melee Attack Use PlayStation Square Button to strike an opponent. Use in succession to chain up to four attacks.

Details:
A close-range sword strike delivered on the ground.
  • Up to four consecutive strikes can be chained into a combo.
  • Dodging will interrupt a combo.
  • Striking at the precise moment of an enemy attack will not only block the attack, but also temporarily leave the enemy open for a counter. This is called a parry.
(None) This ability is learned and mastered by default.
Precision Dodge Executing a dodge with PlayStation R1 Button at the moment of an enemy attack not only increases evasion efficacy, but also allows for counterattacks using either PlayStation Square Button or PlayStation Triangle Button.

Details:
Leap out of the way of an enemy attack at the very last moment.

Immediately following a prevision dodge:
  • PlayStation Square Button can be used to execute a Precision Strike.
  • PlayStation Triangle Button can be used to execute a Precision Shot.
If a precision dodge is executed in midair, the follow-up attack can only be executed upon landing.
Mastery:
Extends trigger window.
Master: 500
Stomp Use PlayStation Cross or X Button while in the air to kick off a nearby enemy, increasing jump height and duration.

Details:
Kick off an enemy to increase jump height and duration.
  • Recommended for use with abilities like Downthrust which deal more damage when dealt from higher up.
  • Can be used at any time regardless of Clive’s recovery status.
  • Use PlayStation Analog Left Stick while stomping to determine jump direction.
  • Tilt PlayStation Analog Left Stick after stomping to extend jump distance or change direction.
Mastery:
Increases maximum kicks to two.
Learn: 15
Master: 170
Swift Recovery Use PlayStation R1 Button to recover immediately after being knocked back or down by an enemy.

Details:
Decreases knockback and knockdown recovery time by 50%.
  • Deals a melee attack to nearby enemies upon recovery.
  • Can parry enemy attacks.
(None) Learn: 10
Taunt Use PlayStation R2 Button+PlayStation Select Button to pull the attention of an enemy target.

Details:
Provoke an enemy to attack immediately.
  • Recommended for luring enemies into a Precision Dodge or a parry.
  • Can be used at any time, except when recovering from damage.
  • Will have no effect on some powerful enemies.
(None) This ability provides little to no value and it is recommended that you don’t waste Ability Points on this.
