Walk up to Auron to continue with a few more cutscenes. Hit up the Save Sphere and save your game before you do anything. The fiends within Macalania Woods are water based - completely opposite of the fiends you were fighting in the Thunder Plains. Switch your weapons to any that have the ‘Lightningstrike’ ability and switch your armor to any that have ‘Water Ward’ or ‘Waterproof’ to make the upcoming fights much easier (and only if you happen to have already found these items as random loot).
Follow the same pathway that the rest of your team went down that leads up into the trees. Just around the corner is a hidden chest that contains Sleepy Cait Sith, a weapon for Lulu. Further on down the pathway is a treasure chest which contains 2,000 gil. Go up the tree branch leading to the next area.
Continue along the pathway until you reach the furtherest northern point on the map and you will find a treasure chest lodged in behind a tree. Open it to obtain three Phoenix Downs. You will run into Barthello once you get far enough along the bottom pathway.
Ignore the Macalania Woods Butterfly Hunt for now. Completing the game will get you the Saturn Sigil which is used to obtain Kimahri’s Celestial Weapon, the Spirit Lance, which means you can come back and do this quest once you’re able to complete the remaining steps in obtaining the Spirit Lance.
The pathway in the next area is completely straight with no turn-offs so you cannot get lost. There is a treasure chest along the way behind a tree that contains a Remedy.
Save your game at the Save Sphere before you continue as there is a boss battle coming up. Buy any items that you may be running low on from O’aka XXIII who is just a little further down the pathway. This is the first time that Hi-Potions will be available for purchase within the shop so stock up. Start off by entering his shop and then exit the shop. He will ask you if you think the prices are either too expensive, too cheap or just right. Select “too expensive” and he will drop the prices.
The closest path on the right side of the screen is currently blocked off - it does not lead anywhere and does not come into play until later on in the game. There is an Al Bhed Primer (vol. XV) that you will want to pick up part way down the path. Use the screenshot below to help you find it. Continue north to meet up with the rest of your team and then follow Auron and Yuna down the pathway to initiate the next boss fight.
The mechanics of this boss fight are fairly straightforward. Spherimorph changes and rotates the elements that it attacks with and that it is weak to. So, for example, is Spherimorph is attacking with Fire based spells it is currently weak to Ice based magics. Recall the different weaknesses:
- Attacking with Fire means that it is weak to Ice (and immune to Fire)
- Attacking with Ice means that it is weak to Fire (and immune to Ice)
- Attacking with Lightning means that it is weak to Water (and immune to Lightning)
- Attacking with Water means that it is weak to Lightning (and immune to Water)
Just attack Spherimorph with a regular attack to find out what element Spherimorph is currently using and currently immune to. Spherimorph automatically counters each attack with a weak magic spell.
You will want to start off by immediately adding Lulu into your party to start utilizing her magic attacks. You may also want to use Auron’s Magic Break ability to weaken the attacks Spherimorph will be using against you. Yuna’s Nul spell, such as NulBlaze, NulShock, NulTide and NulFrost work as excellent preventative measures to absorb magic based attacks.
The strategy is to use one character to attack and find out what element Spherimorph currently is (likely Tidus). Swap out Tidus’ weapon if it has any elemental based attack ability as this will cause it to heal the boss from time to time. Use Yuna to heal up Tidus while he attacks and use Lulu to spam elemental spells until you defeat Spherimorph.
You will obtain Jecht’s Sphere at the conclusion of the battle. Obtaining Jecht Spheres are how you add to Auron’s Overdrive abilities. Check out the Overdrive section for more information. This Jecht Sphere will teach Auron the Shooting Star ability.
Auron has more things to say to Tidus before you can leave the area, but afterwards, make sure that you save at the Save Sphere before you proceed. The Save Sphere is just south of where Auron broke through the pathway. Go north once you are ready.
Lake Macalania - Agency Front
You have reached another of Rin’s Travel Agencies. Start off by grabbing the Al Bhed Primer vol. XVI that is sitting on the ground to the left of the entryway. Buy any items that you may need from O’aka XXIII. Another reminder that Hi-Potions are now purchasable at the shop so stock up on some if you need them.
Walk over and talk to Clasko and the Chocobo to get the story rolling again. He will ask you what job you see him doing - Chocobo Knight or Chocobo Breeder. If you select the “Chocobo Breeder” option you will run into Clasko later on in the game as the keeper of the Chocobos on the S.S. Liki. Drop in to the Travel Agency and save your game at the Save Sphere before you continue.
Exit the Agency and travel west following the red arrow on the mini-map. You will be interrupted with a quick cutscene involving Tromell Guado discussing Maester Seymour’s quick disappearance in Guadosalam. Make sure that you and your party (without Yuna) are ready for the next boss battle before you rush in. You have one last opportunity to go back to the Travel Agency to save or purchase items if you need to. Equip any weapons you possess currently that have the ‘Lightningtouch’ ability before you jump into the fray.
Boss Battle: Crawler
The mechanics of this fight are fairly straightforward. There is a small, floating machine called a Negator that disables all of your magic and summoning abilities. Your first priority in this fight is to take out the Negator using regular attacks. You will need Wakka to take care of this for you. Have your other party members use their skills and special abilities, such as Cheer, Focus, Haste, etc. while Wakka is attacking of the Negator. It has approximately 1,000 HP. Attack Crawler directly once it has been destroyed.
Crawler has an ability called Mana Beam which takes three turns to fully charge. If you do enough damage to it during this period it will cancel the attack, however this will cause Crawler to release another Negator which will have to be destroyed.
This boss is weak to Thunder and Lightning based attacks. Take an opportunity to summon Ixion at some point during the fight as Ixion’s Lightning based magic works great against Crawler. You can also complete the fight without destroying the Negator which will stop the Crawler from countering all attacks with Assault.
Lake Macalania - Crevasse
Grab the treasure chest just outside of Macalania Temple for a free Mega-Potion.
Macalania - Road
The Al Bhed soldier at the bottom of the stairs will give you 400 gil if you talk to her. Follow the pathway all the way around and head into the temple.
Macalania - Hall
Save your game at the Save Sphere before you continue. Talk to Tromell and he will give you a Shell Targe. The Shell Targe is a terrible shield - the ability only comes into play when Rikku is low on health.
Melinda will rush over to meet you as soon as you enter the temple. There is a treasure chest on the left side of the temple that contains 5,000 gil. There is another treasure chest on the opposite side of the temple that contains two X-Potions.
Attempt to walk up the steps and the team will be interrupted by one of the temple acolytes on the lower floor. The group will watch the sphere of Lord Jyscal. There is a treasure chest at the back of the room that contains two Remedy. Talk to the person closest to the chest to receive two Hi-Potions and then exit the room to continue the story.
Save your game and buy any items you need from O’aka XXIII as there is a boss battle incoming.
Boss Battle: Seymour
This fight involves Seymour and two Guado Guardians. The Guado Guardians will cast protect on themselves while Maester Seymour will cast Shell on himself. Tidus, Yuna and Wakka will all have Trigger Commands available to them for this fight. Using Tidus’ Trigger Command to talk to Seymour will raise his strength while using Yuna’s or Wakka’s will raise their Magic Defence attribute.
The Guado Guardians will step in front of Seymour if you try to physically attack him. They can be fairly difficult to defeat because they have an Auto-Potion ability which will cause them to use a potion on themselves every time they are hit. You can nullify this effect in one of two ways:
1) Have Rikku use ‘Steal’ on each Guado Guardian - they will no longer have Hi-Potions to use
2) Use Auron’s ‘Threaten’ ability which stun them and cause them to be unable to use any moves
Destroy both Guado Guardians before you move on to Seymour. Have Yuna use her Nul magics (NulBlaze, NulShock, NulTide and NulFrost) to nullify Seymour’s magic based attacks as they come.
Boss Battle: Anima
Tidus will suggest that Yuna summon her new Aeon at the start of this battle and I suggest that you follow his advice. The new Aeon will be called ‘????’ under Yuna’s summons (it’s Shiva). You can use Blizzara on Shiva at any time to heal her HP back up to full health. Continue to heal Shiva until you can use her Overdrive ability, Diamond Dust, and continue this pattern until Anima (or ????) is defeated. Use Diamond Dust while Anima is boosting to increase the amount of damage that it does.
???? will likely die at some point in the fight. Hammer away at Anima with regular attacks to bring him down and be sure to keep your HP as high as possible as Anima’s Overdrive is pretty much an instant kill and a game over. Anima’s Pain move will also be an instant kill on one of your party members.
Save your game at the Save Sphere at the conclusion of the fight. Go through the doorway on the left side next to the Save Sphere to enter the Macalania Cloister of Trials.
Macalania - Road
Buy any items that you need from O’aka XXIII and then save your game at the Save Sphere. You will be chased by Guado Guardians as you proceed down the pathway and you will be thrown into a battle each time one catches you. They run faster than Tidus so a few battles are inevitable.
The Guado Guardians that you face are similar to the ones you saw during the fight with Seymour. They use the Auto-Potion ability to automatically heal themselves for 1,000 HP after every time they take damage so use Rikku’s ‘Steal’ ability to prevent them from using this ability.
Lake Macalania - Crevasse
You won’t have the luxury of the machina to traverse the crevasse as speedily this time. Choose to continue south (or to the right) when you reach the first fork in the road. Following this path will lead to a treasure chest that contains a Lv. 1 Key Sphere.
Save when you come across the Save Sphere as you have a boss battle coming up.
Boss Battle: Wendigo & Guado Guardians
This is another fight, similar to the one against Maester Seymour, that involves two Guado Guardian sidekicks.
The Guado Guardians still have the Auto-Potion ability enabled so you will have to use Rikku’s ‘Steal’ ability on each of them in order to prevent them from healing after every attack. The Guado Guardians will caste Haste and Berserk on Wendigo which will cause its attacks to be incredibly powerful.
You will want to use Wakka’s ‘Dark Attack’ ability as Wendigo is susceptible to the Darkness status effect. It is also advisable to use Auron’s ‘Power Break’ ability to lessen the damage done by any of Wendigo’s attacks that do connect.
The Guado Guardians will cast Protect and Shell on Wendigo if you kill them both. Whether or not the fight is easier with both Guado Guardian’s left alive or by killing them first and dealing with Protect and Shell is up for debate. Wendigo can be defeated with either strategy. The Guado Guardians can negate the Darkness status effect though as they will use Eye Drops on Wendigo so I recommend defeating them first.
Save your game at the Save Sphere once the fight has concluded. Talk to each of your party members to continue the story. Make sure to go back and grab the two treasure chests behind the characters you spoke to. One contains a Lv. 2 Key Sphere (beside Kimahri as shown below) and the one at the back by Auron contains an Avenger, a weapon for Tidus that has the ‘Counterattack’ ability.
