Mi’ihen Highroad: South
As soon as you touch the Save Sphere you will be given a quick overview of how to scout for Blitzball players. Check out the Blitzball Section for more information.
Note: Yuna has a difficult solo battle coming up very shortly. You can tilt the odds of this battle into your favour if you include Yuna in your party and if you allow her Overdrive gauge to charge up. Hold onto her Overdrive until the upcoming battle against Belgemine.
You now have Auron in your party. Auron has attacks which are capable of piercing armor so its a very good idea to switch him into your primary party. Many of the enemies you will encounter along the Mi’ihen Highroad have high armor. The first battle that you encounter along the Mi’ihen Highroad will provide you with a similar explanation.
The Dual Horn enemies (shown below) can be fairly difficult. Their standard attacks hit for quite a bit of HP. A good tactic for defeating them is to use Wakka’s ‘Dark Attack’ as they are susceptible to the Darkness status effect.
Talk to everyone that you encounter along the way. Many of the people along the roadway will provide you with items including two Antidotes and a Hunter’s Spear.
Continue along the pathway - you will have to watch a number of cutscenes and you will be given a number of historical explanations starting with one about the ruins from Maechen. Behind the ruins are a treasure chest that contains an Ice Brand.
Towards the end of the first part of the trail you will see a woman off to the right side. Her name is Belgemine. You will run into her several times throughout the game and she will challenge Yuna to a duel, Aeon against Aeon. She will essentially use an Aeon that is one step higher than Yuna’s current strongest Aeon and you will have to use strategy in order to win the battle.
Boss Battle: Belgemine - First Challenge Against Ifrit
There really is no strategy to the first fight against Belgemine. Belgemine will summon Ifrit and Yuna will only have the option to summon Valefor. Ifrit’s attack pattern is fairly straight forward. It will alternate between ‘Attack’ and ‘Meteor Strike’ and then use ‘Hell Fire’ if its Overdrive gauge is maxed.
As noted earlier on, you can make the fight really easy if you charge Yuna’s Overdrive gauge prior to the battle. This will cause Valefor to start the battle with a charged Overdrive gauge as well.
Because of the alternating nature of Ifrit’s attacks, the best strategy to use is to Shield for every Meteor Strike and then to use Blizzard for every attack (capitalizing on Ifrit’s weakness to Ice based attacks).
If you win the fight you will receive an Echo Ring and if you lose the fight you will receive a Seeker Ring. The fight is pretty much impossible if you have not levelled Yuna up prior to this battle.
Continue down the Mi’ihen Highroad after the battle.
Mi’ihen Highroad - South
There is a treasure chest on the north end of the next screen (behind the Crusader, the girl riding the Chocobo) that contains a Remedy. A man will also run past and give you a Red Ring. Continue along the pathway and run right past the Blitzball. By choosing not to kick it off into the distance you will receive three Soft.
Mi’ihen Highroad - Central
Talk to the man who walks past to receive a Lv. 1 Key Sphere - a very useful item. Continue along the pathway and grab the treasure chest off to the right. It contains 2,000 gil! The man walking back and forth on the trail also has 600 gil to give you.
Continue down the pathway and approach the wagon. The wagon will move out of the way as you get closer. Talk to the person on the left side of the road to receive a Hi Potion. Move over to the right side to talk to Gatta and Luzzu about the Crusaders.
Down the pathway you will run into another non-playable character who will give you 4 Antidotes. You will also run into Shelinda; she will provide the team with some background information on machina, the Crusaders and the teachings of Yevon.
There is one more treasure chest at the end of the trail that contains three Eye Drops.
Highroad - Agency, Front (Rin’s Travel Agency)
Save your game at the Save Sphere after the short cutscene outside of the agency. There is an Al Bhed Compilation Sphere available at the bottom of the screen. You can use the Al Bhed Compilation Sphere to load Al Bhed Primer data from a previous game into your current game. If you have previously played through the game and have gathered some (or all) of the Al Bhed Primers you can use them in this game to understand what the Al Bhed are saying much earlier on.
Exit the Agency for a quick cutscene with Yuna and Auron at the sunset.
You will start off in Rin’s Travel Agency one more time. As you move towards the exit a young man will give you a Lv. 1 Key Sphere which you can use to break through a Lv. 1 Lock blocking a pathway on the Sphere Grid. For more information check out the Sphere Grid section.
You will meet Rin once you try to leave the Agency. He will introduce himself and will give you a quick explanation regarding Al Bhed Primers. He will give you Al Bhed Primer vol. VIII. Time for a battle against the Chocobo Eater…
Boss Battle: Chocobo Eater
The Chocobo Eater battle can be won through two different methods. The first method is to push the Chocobo Eater off the cliff. The second method is to defeat the boss normally by depleting all of its HP.
You will receive two Lv. 1 Key Spheres if you defeat the Chocobo Eater by pushing it off the edge. You will receive the experience and AP points (but no Key Spheres) if you defeat the Chocobo Eater by depleting its HP. Lv. 1 Key Spheres are a nice item but they are fairly common, especially later on in the game, so you can really choose either option.
Make sure to use Tidus’ Cheer ability early on. The Chocobo Eater is also weak to Fire attacks so you may want to utilize Lulu for this fight, especially if you have been levelling her up.
This boss can use a move called Fist of Fury which can deal upwards of 1,000 damage. You will get a warning in the form of a “You’re next!” on the screen. Be prepared to heal up (and revive) a character when you see that warning.
Make use of Auron’s Power Break, Wakka’s Dark Attack and Tidus’ Cheer abilities to make the fight easier. And make sure to abuse Tidus’ Haste ability!
Save your game at the Save Sphere inside Rin’s Travel Agency before you take a Chocobo. Speak to the woman outside the Travel Agency to jump on the Chocobo.
Continue north through “Highroad - Newroad, South” across the two bridges. Use the menu screen if you are not sure which area you are in specifically.
Highroad - Newroad, North
As you go around the curve you might notice a small yellow feather laying on the ground. It can be fairly difficult to see. Use the screenshot below for reference. Press X while near that feather to have your Chocobo fly up to a treasure chest. The treasure chest will automatically be opened awarding you with a Heat Lance.
Keep an eye out on the path to find the Al Bhed Primer vol. IX. Continue down the roadway into the next area.
Highroad - North End
Have your Chocobo kick open the chest lying on the ground to receive two Hi-Potions. Before you continue northward (where the red arrow is pointing) continue along the south-eastern path (shown in the screenshot below).
Highroad - Oldroad, North
You will find another Chocobo feather lying on the ground on the left side of the screen. Press ‘X’ while near the feather to have your Chocobo fly you up to another hidden treasure chest which contains a Thunder Blade. The Chocobo will continue along the trail to find another Scout in a treasure chest automatically. Continue west into the next area.
Highroad - Oldroad, South
Continue past the open area back on to the trail. There is a Y intersection part way down the path, the entrance of which is shown in the screenshot below. Go down the pathway to find another Chocobo Feather. Climbing this cliff will lead to a treasure chest containing a Fortune Sphere.
O’aka XXIII is further on down the pathway. You can speak to him while on the Chocobo to lend him more gil or buy items if you choose. At the very end of the path is a treasure chest which contains the Mars Crest which you will not need until a later point in the game.
Go back to the Highroad - North End where you had the Chocobo kick open the chest (and where the red arrows are pointing). You can now dismount from your Chocobo. Talk to Dona to get the story rolling again and don’t forget to save your game at the Save Sphere.
If you talk to Clasko he will ask for your help in locating captain Lucil. This was put in the game to give you another chance to jump on the Chocobo if you accidentally dismounted.
Approach the caravan blocking the road to initiate another scene with Gatta and Luzzu. The caravan will move out of the way. The guard at the bottom right side of the screen will offer you the opportunity to donate gil towards the operation Mi’ihen cause.
- Donate 100 gil and he will give you a Scout
- Donate 1,000 gil and he will give you an Ice Lance
- Donate 10,000 gil and he will give you a Moon Ring
None of these items are worth spending gil on so ignore them all. Try to continue walking down the pathway and you will be denied passage just like Dona. The guard will give you an option to have Operation Mi’ihen explained to you if you would like.
Move away from the gateway and another cutscene will be initiated involving Maester Seymour. Seymour will help Yuna and her guardians gain entry. Move down the pathway to continue the story.
