You must obtain the Celestial Mirror before you can obtain or create any of the Celestial Weapons. Click on the link for more information on how to obtain the Cloud Mirror and Celestial Mirror.
Caladbolg is Tidus’ Celestial Weapon. It is named after a great sword in Irish mythology and it needs to be combined with the Sun Crest and the Sun Sigil in order to add on its special abilities.
Travel to the Calm Lands and challenge the Chocobo Trainer. You need to defeat her in each of her four challenges. You can complete the Chocobo Trainer’s challenges your first visit through the Calm Lands however you will need to defeat her once more in order to open up the pathway that leads to Caladbolg.

Note: The first time you attempt this side quest you will not get a choice of Chocobos but the first one you ride is called the “Wobbly Chocobo”. This Chocobo is very difficult to control. Each time it veers off the pathway you should press left and right on the D-pad until it starts going straight again. The more you press left and right the easier it will be to keep the Chocobo on track. Your prize for successful completion will an Elixir. This is the only mini-game that you need to complete in order to ride a Chocobo. You can skip the remaining mini-games if you would prefer.
The object of this mini-game is to dodge the blitzballs that are trying to hit you. The blitzballs follow a pattern and there is either a very small gap between them and they come close together or there is a larger gap. Continue to dodge them going the same direction when they are close together and only switch from left to right or from right to left when there is a larger gap between the balls. Successful completion will get you a Lv. 1 Key Sphere.
Hyper Dodger Chocobo:
This is the same mini-game except that there are birds to dodge in addition to blitzballs. The strategy for this portion is long, wide, sweeping turns to dodge everything all at the same time. You are given more time to make it to the finish line so taking the long way and making huge ‘S’ figures is the optimal strategy.
Catcher Chocobo is just a Chocobo race with some slight modifications. Every bird that you get hit by will add 3 seconds to your overall time and every balloon that you get will subtract 3 seconds from your time. Your opponent is likely to obtain nearly all of the balloons at the beginning of the race so don’t fret if you miss out on those few. Missing the oncoming birds is the key to winning. Your prize for successful completion is a Lv. 3 Key Sphere.
Once you have complete the Catcher Chocobo challenge make your way to the north-west section of the Calm Lands. There is a small pathway that leads downward that used to have a man blocking it. You can now touch the wall (which will only react if you have the Celestial Mirror in your inventory) to obtain Caladbolg.
Caladbolg has some pretty terrible abilities to start off with. The only ability it has is “No AP”. You must now obtain the Sun Sigil and Sun Crest in order to power it up.
Note: You may already have the Sun Crest if you had been following a guide previously. Check your inventory under the Key Items tab to make sure.
The Sun Crest can be obtained after you have defeated Yunalesca in the Zanarkand Ruins. Travel to Zanarkand and go all the way through, past the Cloister of Trials, and into the last room where you fought her. You can use the teleportation pads to warp there faster.
Walk down the stairs that lead downward. You will be teleported to the other set of stairs on the opposite side of the room. You must to this step in order to make a treasure chest appear at the back of the room. This treasure chest contains the Sun Crest.
The Sun Sigil is a little bit more difficult to obtain. You must challenge the Chocobo Trainer to another race in the Chocobo Catcher challenge and you must obtain a time of less than 0:00 once you reach the finish line. In order to do this you will have to obtain as many of the balloons as you can and make sure that you do not get hit by any of the birds.
The best strategy is to hit as many balloons as you can and accept that you will get hit by a bird or two. This challenge takes a lot of skill and a boat load of luck. Keep at it until you get it!
Return to Macalania Woods to the area where you received the Celestial Mirror once you have obtained both the Sun Crest and the Sun Sigil. Offer Caladbolg up twice to fully power it up using both the Crest and Sigil.
Caladbolg has the following abilities when fully powered up:
- Break Damage Limit - Allows Tidus to do more than 9,999 damage in a single attack
- Triple Overdrive - Charges Tidus’ Overdrive at triple the speed
- Evade & Counter - Allows Tidus to counterattack physical attacks and gives the possibility of evading the damage as well. The counter will work regardless of whether the evade is successful.
- Magic Counter - Allows Tidus to counterattack magic attacks
