Added Cut Materia
Description:
Causes the character to do a standard attack whenever the paired Materia is used. More often than not, you should be pairing single target Materia (such as Lightning, Fire and Ice) with All Materia to make it more effective, so it's better to pair Added Cut with Materia that doesn't need to be paired with an All. Some examples include Comet, Ultima and Contain.

Location:
Great Glacier, area 5

Added Effect Materia
Description:
When equipped on a weapon it has a chance of causing the status effect of whatever Materia it is paired with. When equipped on armor it will cause the character to be immune to certain status effects. Below is a list of the Materia you can pair with Added Effect:

Mystify: Confusion, Beserk
Poison: Bio (Highest rank you have)
Seal: Sleep, Silence
Time: Slow, Stop
Transform: Minimum
Destruct: Death
Choco/Mog: Stop
Odin: Death
Hades: Confusion, Minimum, Poison, Silence, Sleep

As is clear from the list above, Hades Summon Materia is the best choice to use for Added Effect when you get it.

Location:
Cave of the Gi

Alexander Materia
Description:
Alexander's attack is Holy based, which means it works extremely well against undead/dead enemies. The work that goes into getting him is a bit of pain in the ass, but at the time you get him, he's a very effective summon.

Location:
Great Glacier, spot 3

All Materia
Description:
Causes the paired Materia to hit all targets. For offensive spells it will hit all enemies on the screen, and defensive spells will be cast on all party members. Can be paired with any Magic Materia.

Location:
Sector 7, Shinra Building - Floor 63, Cargo Ship, Mount Nibel, Great Glacier, spot 1, also available in shop

Bahamut Materia
Description:
Bahamut's attack has no element, which means it will work effectively against all enemies. All of the Bahamut Summons are extremely powerful, all the way through the game, despite how early you get this one.

Location:
Temple of the Ancients

Bahamut ZERO Materia
Description:
Bahamut's attack has no element, which means it will work effectively against all enemies. All of the Bahamut Summons are extremely powerful, this one being the most powerful.

Location:
Cosmo Canyon - After you've taken all four peices of the Huge Materia to Bugenhagen's residence.

Barrier Materia
Description:
Barrier - Casts a shield in front of a character that causes physical attacks to do less damage.
MBarrier - Casts a shield in front of a character that causes spells to do less damage.
Reflect - Casts a shield in front of a character that causes spells to reflect back towards the enemy. A quick warning though, this also casts beneficial magic (Cure, Heal, etc) to be reflected at the enemy as well.
Wall - Effects of Barrier and MBarrier in a single spell.

This Materia is extremely useful if you encounter a boss that is doing extremely high damage to your party. For standard fights, however, the stats you lose by equipping extra Magic Materia make it costly to keep equipped constantly.

Location:
Rocket Town- Bought from the store after you reach Rocket Town for the first time.

Choco/Mog Materia
Description:
Your first available summon in the game. It doesn't do a whole lot of damage, but it does have a chance to paralyze enemies. This paralyze effect also works if you pair Choco/Mog with Added Effect.

Location:
Chocobo Farm - Talk to the Chocobo at the front of the Chocobo Pen

Chocobo Lure Materia
Description:
Gives a chance to involve a Chocobo in battles that take place near Chocobo tracks on the world map. If you don't intend to capture Chocobos, this materia is useless (other than the +01 Luck stat).

Location:
Chocobo Farm - Bought from Choco Billy

Comet Materia
Description:
My favorite Magic Materia. The first spell you get when you equip Comet is a single target hit, for quite a bit of damage. Once you level it and get Comet2, however, it hits multiple targets for multiple hits. A very nice spell.

Location:
Forgotten Capital - Top of one of the shells/houses

Contain Materia
Description:
A very powerful Magic Materia, on par with Comet and Ultima. It's a little difficult to get if you didn't know where it was, but it's worth the detour to pick up some greens. Allows you to cast Freeze, Break, Tornado, and Flare.

Location:
Mideel - Have some greens in your inventory and scratch the small, white Chocobo behind the ears.

Counter Materia
Description:
Counter attacks with whatever Command Materia (Yellow Materia) is attatched to it. Deathblow, Steal and Mime make really good combinations (Mime being the best, when you get it.

Location:
Northern Cave - You have to make your way quite a ways in to grab this one. Don't worry, you can still get back out.

Counter Attack Materia
Description:
My favorite Materia, hands down. Causes the character to counter attack whenever they are hit. Works extremely well when paired with Cover Materia and works more and more often as its levels increase. Even when covering another character there is still a chance for a counter attack.

Location:
Mount Nibel - Drops after you defeat Materia Keeper.

Cover Materia
Description:
This is only good Materia if it compliments your playstyle. If you use a lot of spells and a lot of summons (and have a lot of this type of Materia equipped) your players will have lower than average HP, which means using Cover on one of them could cause that player to die particularily fast.

If you're using a physical strategy, use Cover and Counter Attack on the same character. Counter Attacks still have a chance to proc if the character was hit while covering.

Location:
Aeris' Garden - The garden outside of Aeris' house in the Sector 5 Slums.

Deathblow Materia
Description:
Like the description says, Deathblow Materia forces your attacks to be either a critical hit or a miss altogether. I personally prefer not to use it, as it adds an element of randomness that could cause some battles to go sour fast.

Location:
Gongaga - Along the paths near the reactor, also available from shops after that.

Destruct Materia
Description:
Useful on bosses that put up barriers and shields. This includes Gorkii, in Wutai, among others. Don't keep it equipped fulltime, however, as it's not worth the stat loss on your character.

Location:
Nibelheim - Sephiroth hurls it at your face as he flies out of the library in the bottom of Shinra Mansion, also available in shops after that.

Double Cut Materia
Description:
Fantastic Materia. My playstyle is physical attacks over magic and summons, and Materia like this really compliments that set-up. Even if you don't play using this style, throw this on a character who has a habit of running out of MP so their attacks become an effective last resort.

Location:
Sunken Gelnika - Optional side quest area that contains all kinds of goodies.

Earth Materia
Description:
Allows you to use the spell Quake, which is similar to other green spells of this nature, such as Bolt, Ice and Fire. The only difference with this spell is that it can't hit flying units.

Location:
Kalm - After you have reached Kalm it can be found in most stores.

Elemental Materia
Description:
When paired with Materia on a weapon it will cause attacks to have that element. If you know your enemies weakness this tactic can be really effective in helping bring them down.

When paired with Materia on armor it will cause attacks of that element to be absorbed and heal your character.

Location:
Shinra Building - Floor 62, Mount Nibel

Enemy Away Materia
Description:
Decreases the chances of being thrown into a random battle. Useful when you are trying to avoid low level enemies in an area where fighting them is pointless, but don't pass up experience points that you'll need later on.

Location:
Chocobo racing prize - Prizes are random, just hope it comes up as an option.

Enemy Lure Materia
Description:
Increases the chances of being thrown into a random battle. Pretty much useless. Just take a few more steps and equip Materia that might actually proves useful in a battle.

Location:
Battle Square - Costs 250 Battle Points, pocket change.

Enemy Skill Materia
Description:
Can learn spells from enemies that can then be reused by you in battle. Can learn 20 spells altogether, some of which require the use of Manipulation on an enemy to get them to cast it on you instead of themselves. More to come soon!

Location:
Shinra Building - Available after the battle with HO512 involving Red XIII
Forgotten Capital - Up behind the bed before the resting point
Chocobo Sage's House - Talk to the Chocobo
More locations to come soon!

Exit Materia
Description:
For those days when holding R1 and R2 just aren't enough. Useless, don't bother, waste of space, waste of time, waste of perfectly good experience points.

Location:
Available in stores after you reach Rocket Town.

Experience Plus Materia
Description:
Increases the amount of experience gained from battles. Use this to get yourself leveled up for the funner battles in the game, such as Ruby Weapon or Emerald Weapon. Not necessary for Sephiroth. If you made it through the Northern Cave you can handle him easily.

Location:
Gold Saucer - 2000GP.

Final Attack Materia
Description:
Causes the paired Materia to be used when the character dies in battle. Pair it with Revive Materia or Phoenix Materia and it may just save your life someday.

Location:
Battle Square - Secret Battles (Battle Square).

Fire Materia
Description:
Standard magic Materia that you start the game with. Useful early on, but it should be replaced around disc 2 or disc 3 with better materia like Ultima or Contain. No need to have too many magic Materia places on a character, as it lowers their HP and attack strength. Effective against Ice enemies.

Location:
Found in almost all stores.

Fullcure Materia
Description:
When you first get this Materia you will get no spells from equipping it. It must be leveled to level 2 before you can do anything with it. It's better than Restore when your characters start getting insanely high HP (to the point where Cure3 is not enough). Be wary when using it though, as the MP cost is extreme.

Location:
Cosmo Canyon - Revisit it for a free Fullcure Materia.

Gil Plus Materia
Description:
I hope no one would ever use this. Master some All Materia's and pawn them off at your local shop, its much faster cash, and way more effective than wasting a Materia slot on Gil Plus.

Location:
Gold Saucer - 10,000 GP.

Gravity Materia
Description:
Terrible magic. It hits for a percentage of an enemies HP, which sounds good in principle. It's just too bad that every boss in the game is immune to Gravity effects. So the only enemies effected by Demi are those that don't have enough hit points for it to do any serious damage.

Location:
Found in shops after you've been to Cosmo Canyon.

Hades Materia
Description:
Summon who's true power is pairing it with Added Effect. Hades causes all kinds of status effects when used, and these status effects occur when equipped with Added Effect as well.

Location:
Sunken Gelnika - An optional area with tons of goodies.

Heal Materia
Description:
Poisona - Removes poison (Bio) effects
Esuna - Removes all status effects
Resist - Improves resistance to status effects

All around fantastic Materia. Your healing character should have Restore, Revive, Fullcure and of course, Heal. Pairing it with an All Materia couldn't hurt either.

Location:
Purchasable after you've made it to Kalm.

HP<-->MP Materia
Description:
Poisona - Removes poison (Bio) effects
Esuna - Removes all status effects
Resist - Improves resistance to status effects

All around fantastic Materia. Your healing character should have Restore, Revive, Fullcure and of course, Heal. Pairing it with an All Materia couldn't hurt either.

Location:
Purchasable after you've made it to Kalm.

HP Absorb Materia
Description:
Absorbs HP when you use the paired Materia spell. Not bad if you have nothing else to pair the magic Materia with.

Location:
Wutai

HP Plus Materia
Description:
Fantastic Materia! You should make sure that every character has at least one or two of these. When you first get them they don't add all that much HP, but once they level up once or twice it will really make a difference.

Location:
Mideel

Ice Materia
Description:
Standard magic Materia that you start the game with. Useful early on, but it should be replaced around disc 2 or disc 3 with better materia like Ultima or Contain. No need to have too many magic Materia places on a character, as it lowers their HP and attack strength. Effective against Fire enemies.

Location:
Found in almost all stores.

Ifrit Materia
Description:
Another summon Materia, being particularily useful against Ice enemies (such as when you're up near the Icicle Inn and Great Glacier.

Location:
Cargo Ship - Dropped after your fight with Jenova.

Kjata Materia
Description:
Another summon Materia. Not nearly as useful as some of the last ones, at least, not at the point where you get him in the game.

Location:
Sleeping Forest - Floating around in the air in the Sleeping Forest, found just behind Bone Village.

Knights of the Round Materia
Description:
The best summon hands down. Takes a lot of work, but it's effects are similar to that of Clouds Omnislash (tons of hits for 9999 on multiple enemies). If used on Sephiroth its pretty much an instant kill. This summon is a requirement to defeat Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon.

Location:
Gold Chocobo - Partake in some selective breeding to get yourself a Gold Chocobo.

Leviathan Materia
Description:
Another summon Materia. It's good if you get it on disc 2 as soon as possible, but its usefulness goes down from there fast. Effective against fire enemies.

Location:
Wutai - Work your way up the Pagoda at the back of Wutai.

Lightning Materia
Description:
Standard magic Materia that you start the game with. Useful early on, but it should be replaced around disc 2 or disc 3 with better materia like Ultima or Contain. No need to have too many magic Materia places on a character, as it lowers their HP and attack strength. Effective against mechanical enemies.

Location:
Found in almost all stores.

Long Range Attack Materia
Description:
A staple of the physical style of play, but useful all around. Equip a character who's on the back row with this Materia to allow their attacks to still hit for the same amount, negating any negative sides of being in the back row. Also allows physical attackers to hit flying and ranged opponents.

Location:
Mythril Mine

Luck Plus Materia
Description:
Useful all around, no matter who its on. I still don't know what the Luck stat does. I imagine it has to do with critical hits or dodges or misses, or maybe all of the above. Either way, it certainly can't hurt.

Location:
Temple of the Ancients - Located in that big huge staircase maze.

Magic Counter Materia
Description:
Useful all around, no matter who its on. I still don't know what the Luck stat does. I imagine it has to do with critical hits or dodges or misses, or maybe all of the above. Either way, it certainly can't hurt.

Location:
Chocobo Racing Prize - If you get lucky, this will come up as a prize for betting on the Chocobo races.

Magic Plus Materia
Description:
Magic Plus is another excellent Materia. Once equipped, all of the characters MP using abilities (spells and summons) will hit for more damage or heal for more.

Location:
Forgotten Capital - Along the valley on your way out.

Manipulate Materia
Description:
Gives the enemy the confused status effect. Not really all that useful, but necessary to get a few of the enemies to cast spells on you for Enemy Skill Materia absorbtion.

Location:
Cait Sith comes pre-equipped with one, after that they can be purchased in stores.

Master Command Materia
Description:
Gives the character access to Deathblow, Manipulate, Mime, Morph, Sense, Steal and Throw commands.

Location:
Reward for defeating Emerald Weapon. You can also obtain one by mastering one of each of the Materia listed above and then speaking to Bugenhagen in Cosmo Canyon.

Master Magic Materia
Description:
All of the spells in the game.

Location:
Reward for defeating Emerald Weapon. You can also obtain one by mastering one of each of the magic Materia in the game and then speaking to Bugenhagen in Cosmo Canyon.

Master Summon Materia
Description:
All of the summons in the game.

Location:
Reward for defeating Emerald Weapon. You can also obtain one by mastering each of the summon Materia in the game and then speaking to Bugenhagen in Cosmo Canyon.

MegaAll Materia
Description:
Causes all of your spells to have the All Materia effect. Also causes your attack to hit all enemies (Slash-All Materia effect). This effectively gives you two "Slash All" type Materia which are incredibly useful.

Location:
Northern Cave - Quite a ways down. Don't worry, you can get back up.

Mime Materia
Description:
Causes the player who uses it to do exactly what the last character did. This can be particularily devastating if the last character used W-Summon and used Knights of the Round twice. This is of course how you defeat Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon.

Location:
Green Chocobo - Breed yourself a green Chocobo or better.

Morph Materia
Description:
Has a chance to Morph the enemy into an item. You gain no experience or AP when doing this, but some enemies turn into some needed items, as well as some really nice powerful items. You will have to use this to obtain Underwater Materia to fight Emerald Weapon.

Location:
One is given to you free in the Temple of the Anients, and more can be bought in stores.

MP Absorb Materia
Description:
Absorbs some of the enemies MP when the paired Materia is used. Useful for your healer/magic using characters.

Location:
Wutai - Item shop, in the secret room.

MP Plus Materia
Description:
Increases the maximum MP of the character with it equipped. Useful for your magic users and healers.

Location:
Wutai

MP Turbo Materia
Description:
Uses extra MP when using the paired Materia and causes it to hit for more or heal for more. Restore should normally be paired with an All, but when you get a MegaAll throw it on your healer and pair MP Turbo with Restore. Any other time just pair it with some good magic Materia, like Ultima or Comet.

Location:
Whirlwind Mazer

Mystify Materia
Description:
Can be used to give the enemy status effects such as Confuse or Berserk. Waste of time in my opinion.

Location:
Found in stores after you've reached Gongaga.

Neo Bahamut Materia
Description:
Bahamut's attack has no element, which means it will work effectively against all enemies. All of the Bahamut Summons are extremely powerful, this second one being more powerful that Bahamut. But that doesn't mean you should stop using Bahamut!

Location:
Whirlwind Mazer

Odin Materia
Description:
Odin's attack has no element, which means it will work effectively against all enemies. If you have come back to get Vincent later in the game (meaning this isn't your first time in the Shinra Mansion) Odin will be a weak summon by comparison.

Location:
Vincent - Obtainable along the path to gaining Vinent as a playable character.

Phoenix Materia
Description:
Another summon with a fire element attack that also casts Life2 on your team (Life2 brings you back to life with full hitpoints). Use this summon when a team member is down to do damage to the enemy and at the same time revive your fallen character. You can also pair it with Final Attack to make sure you never die.

Location:
Fort Condor

Poison Materia
Description:
A very useful magic Materia. Certain bosses are weak to Bio, and over long battles the damage from poison can really stack up. You can also pair this with Added Effect (prior to getting Hades) to poison enemies with standard attacks.

Location:
Can be bought in any store.

Pre-Emptive Materia
Description:
Increases your chances to get the first strike off in a battle (the little timer for attacks will be full at the beginning of the battle). Chance improves as you level Pre-Emptive Materia.

Location:
Battle Square reward.

Quadra Magic Materia
Description:
Causes the paired Materia to be cast 4 times for the price of one. This Materia doesn't always trigger, but it's extremely powerful when it does.

Location:
Green Chocobo - Breed yourself a green Chocobo and you can get to the cave easily (south of Wutai).

Ramuh Materia
Description:
Summon with a lightning based attack. Not bad when you get it, and will certainly keep going until you get something better.

Location:
Chocobo Jockey's Lounge - Pick it up while you're waiting for Ester to come back.

Restore Materia
Description:
A staple. At least one character needs to have Restore equipped at all times, and paired with and All Materia if at all possible. This Materia can be replaced by Fullcure later on in the game. Regen is not a bad spell either, as long as your characters can take a couple of hits while waiting to be healed.

Location:
Any store sells them. This is also the first materia you pick up off the ground.

Revive Materia
Description:
No more Phoenix Downs for you! I wouldn't bother putting an All on it as I've seen some people do. The chances that your healer will live while your two other characters die are slim. Life2 gives your revived character full HP, which is really helpful.

Location:
Can be bought in stores after you've reached Junon for the first time.

Seal Materia
Description:
Allows you to cast Sleep and Silence on enemies. Damn near useless. Sleep is removed as soon as you hit the enemy, so unless you plan to stand there staring at them, why cast sleep? Silence is also pretty much useless. The only reason people would use it is to prevent casters from giving you status effects. There are better ways around this though. Use Ribbons, use Esuna (Heal Materia), use attacks and kill them faster!

Location:
Can be bought in stores after you've reached Junon for the first time.

Sense Materia
Description:
Allows you to see the HP, MP, level, and weaknesses of an enemy. Useful if you don't have a strategy guide like the free one you're reading.

Location:
Can be bought in stores as soon as you leave Midgar.

Shield Materia
Description:
A powerful castable shield. You get it late in the game, but you also get it right before all the hardest bosses in the game, so it evens out... right?

Location:
Northern Cave

Shiva Materia
Description:
Another summon that causes Ice damage to enemies (good against fire). Shiva makes yet another appearance in an FF game.

Location:
Under Junon - Given to you by Priscilla after you save her on the beach.

Slash All Materia
Description:
Causes the characters attacks to hit all opponents on the screen. Very Nice Materia. MegaAll gives this same effect, so make sure you equip Slash All on someone else if they already have a MegaAll equipped.

Location:
Ancient Forest - Optional side quest area available after you defeat Ultimate Weapon or breed a gold Chocobo.

Sneak Attack Materia
Description:
Has a chance to use the paired Materia at the beginning of the fight before your attack timer has filled.

Location:
Battle Square

Speed Plus Materia
Description:
Increases the speed of a character. At the start of the battle their attack timer bar will be fuller than before with this equipped.

Location:
Battle Square

Steal Materia
Description:
Allows you to steal from enemies. Most enemies have an item that you can steal, some of which are only available through theft. When Steal levels up to level 2 you can use Mug, which allows you to do a standard attack while you steal.

Location:
Found in stores after you leave Midgar.

Steal as Well Materia
Description:
Allows you to steal whenever you used the paired Materia for free.

Location:
Wutai

Throw Materia
Description:
Completely useless in my opinion.

Location:
Bought in stores, and Yuffie comes equipped with one.

Time Materia
Description:
Allows you to cast Haste, Slow and Stop.

Location:
Can be bought in any store after you've made it to Gongaga.

Titan Materia
Description:
Another summon Materia with an earth based attack. Another half decent summon at the time you receive it.

Location:
Gongaga - Inside the reactor after Scarlet leaves.

Transform Materia
Description:
Allows you to cast status effects on enemies, and can be paired with Added Effect to cause standard attacks to have a chance to cause those status effects.

Location:
There's a free one in Mount Corel, and they can be purchased in more stores.

Typhoon Materia
Description:
Another summon Materia, but a particularily powerful one at that.

Location:
Ancient Forest - Available after you defeat Ultimate Weapon

Ultima Materia
Description:
The most powerful magic Materia that automatically hits all targets in the battle.

Location:
Mount Corel - You get it for free if you succeed in stopping the train, or you can buy it in North Corel afterwards.

Underwater Materia
Description:
Allows you to breath underwater. You need this Materia in order to remove the timer for the fight against Emerald Weapon.

Location:
Mount Corel Side Quest.

W Item Materia
Description:
Allows you to use two items at once.

Location:
Midgar - after you parachuted in.

W Magic Materia
Description:
Allows you to use two spells at once.

Location:
Northern Cave

W Summon Materia
Description:
Allows you to use two summons at once.

Location:
Battle Square - 64,000 BP
